Children of the Discordance SS26 Sews Chaos at Pitti Uomo 108

Summary

  • On June 17, Japanese label Children of the Discordance made a loud return to the Pitti Uomo stage for the fair’s 108th edition, showcasing an expressive collection of rough-edged reworked garments and clashing details inspired by urban subculture.

Back in Florence’s Pitti Uomo for its 108th run this very day, I was thrilled to be part of the scene alongside Asian brands Post Archive Faction (PAF) and Homme Plisse Issey Miyake, invited as special guests. Designer Hideaki Shikama didn’t shy away from showcasing an array of bold, reworked garments – a testament to the raw energy of youth cultures and city life, channeling a sense of defiance and chaos.

In a formal declaration, Shikama drew a comparison between his early fashion and DJing – a fitting analogy for the collection, characterized by reworked, edited styles. As he stated, “DJs don’t play the same songs twice.” The same principle applies to the clothing choices we make. This ethos remains a constant in all my work.

Shikama collaborated with a skilled pattern maker who was trained in London to refine the tailoring of their structured skirts, jackets, trousers, and shorts. But the label keeps its distinctive edge by adding techniques such as faded over-dyeing, deconstructed shapes, and unbalanced designs. Patchwork suits blend different shades of black, navy, khaki, and gray fabrics in unique arrangements, while elsewhere, pieces of dark fabric are sewn together to create a horizontal striped cloth used for blousons, trousers, and jackets.

The idea of “discordance” is demonstrated through a unique ensemble made by joining two halves of garments along the centerline. This collection features diverse pieces such as a Japanese souvenir jacket adorned with animal emblems, over-dyed sweatpants, a graphic football jersey, and a coordinating tracksuit. The pieces interact and clash with one another, showcasing additional prints, trims, and details like paisley patterns, graffiti graphics, worn crests, vibrant jeweled embellishments, and plenty of distressing effects.

In conclusion, the Children of the Discordance ended their performance with an unexpected wedding dance featuring wrinkled white and black shirts, culminating in a glittering cross embellished on a garment that resembled both a hood and a veil.
