Oscar Winner ‘I’m Still Here’ Gets Shout-Out as Exec From Brazil’s Globo Touts Theatrical Window

At the Fiction & Entertainment conference in Cuenca, Spain this week, there was a significant mention of the Brazilian film “I’m Still Here,” which won an Oscar and was directed by Walter Salles with Fernanda Torres in the lead role, during the event on Wednesday.

Alex Medeiros, who oversees drama, documentaries, and film at streaming service Globoplay of Brazilian media conglomerate Grupo Globo, spoke at the Conecta event in a discussion titled “American Commissioners Uncovered.” He boasted about the movie’s achievements. Noting that the film about a family torn apart by dictatorship was the initial production from the company following its consolidation of two film brands under the Globo Filmes label, he stated: “We are thrilled and filled with pride because we were the first Brazilians to receive the Oscar for best international feature.

Afterward, the executive joked: “From here on, things can only get better, but right now, this is an exceptional moment for us. We’re eager to continue pouring resources into enhancing the theatrical experience.

Globo releases movies in cinemas initially before making them available on its streaming service, and there’s a solid justification for this approach. As Medeiros pointed out, “We believe that films perform better in theaters contribute to their success on our platform, and so far, this theory has held true.

After Globo, the next project is “Schools Beyond Bounds,” a film about a public school situated within one of Brazil’s largest slums, directed by Cao Hamburger. This production is a collaborative effort between Brazil’s Gullane, Portugal’s Ukbar Filmes, and France’s Playtime Group, with additional support from Telecine. In the movie, Julio Andrade portrays an inspiring school principal.

Two weeks from now, as Medeiros revealed at Conecta, we will be filming. We’re excited about this movie because it’s based on a real, inspiring tale. The story follows a man who introduces an extremely innovative approach in a challenging part of Sao Paulo’s educational system.

On a Tuesday gathering at Conecta, representatives from esteemed companies such as Gaumont Television and Warner Bros. Discovery shared insights about their unique content creation strategies and the current landscape within the television industry.
