You might label me as an enthusiastic and unabashed admirer of “The Naked Gun” movie series. These intentionally goofy crime parodies drew their influence from the 1982 television show “Police Squad!”, which embraced the humorously absurd style reminiscent of the comedy classic “Airplane!”. One significant factor behind the trilogy’s success was the late, talented Leslie Nielsen, who masterfully portrayed Lieutenant Frank Drebin’s foolishness and appeal. Thirty years later, we have a fourth film on the horizon, but the initial trailer doesn’t seem particularly promising.
Entitled once more as “The Naked Gun”, the latest version features Seth MacFarlane as producer and Akiva Schaffer taking the director’s chair. Liam Neeson assumes the role of Frank Drebin Jr., with Paul Walter Hauser playing his partner, Captain Ed Hocken Jr., who is the son of the character previously portrayed by George Kennedy. Also starring are Pamela Anderson, Danny Huston, Kevin Durand, CCH Pounder, and Busta Rhymes. Despite the talented ensemble, the film’s uninspired humor attempts and lack of appeal leave much to be desired, even at this early stage. To be fair, it might just be a case of a less-than-impressive trailer, but first impressions can be crucial.
Movie titled ‘The Naked Gun’ hits cinemas on August 1st. Here’s the trailer, let me know if you plan to watch it or not.
