As we eagerly await “Squid Game” Season 3 on Netflix, which premieres June 27, 2025, it might be useful to recall where main character Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) currently stands. With much ground to cover since the series started, Looper has kindly created a refresher video that brings you up to speed on Gi-hun’s physical and mental state. Throughout the first two seasons, he’s faced numerous hardships, so it’s essential to catch up on which characters have perished and who is still in danger (“Squid Game” is known for its intense violence, so viewers should be prepared for potential character deaths in this final season).
In Season 1, Gi-hun participated in a lethal competition offering a prize of 45.6 billion South Korean won. He triumphed but at a tragic cost, as 455 lives were lost. For Season 2, his goal is to permanently halt these games to prevent further casualties. This requires him to rejoin the contest again. Throughout the series, he rallies a resistance movement. Although Gi-hun survives until the end of “Squid Game” Season 2, it appears that the objective of ending the games this time may prove unattainable.
For the last and climactic season of “Squid Game,” anything is possible, even putting Gi-hun’s life at risk if he chooses to give it up for someone else. The teaser trailer for Season 3 hints at thrilling twists in these concluding episodes, like contestants being caught within a labyrinth. Could one of the new challenges be hide-and-seek or laser tag? We’ll learn the answer on June 27.
How Squid Game has made history
Released in September 2021, “Squid Game” Season 1 became Netflix’s most-watched TV season ever, edging out “Wednesday” Season 1. Three years later, in December 2024, the much-anticipated Season 2 premiered, and viewers couldn’t get enough: Within its first week, it garnered a staggering 4.9 billion minutes of view time. To keep fans engaged between seasons, Netflix introduced a real-life competition show called “Squid Game: The Challenge,” where contestants competed for a chance to win $4.56 million. As expected, no one actually died during this reality show, but it appeared that the show failed to capture the essence of the scripted series’ themes, which revolve around the exploitation of lower classes by society.
The popular series ‘Squid Game’ has received widespread praise, with a high approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season (95%). The second season saw a slight drop to an 83% rating, but it still garnered positive reviews from top critics such as Aramide Tinubu of Variety, who described it as “deeply disturbing, ultra-violent, and offering fresh perspectives.” We hope that Season 3 builds upon these themes and provides a fitting conclusion to the beloved series.
