For quite a while, PC gaming enthusiasts have had their suspicions that Kim Jong Un, the ruler of North Korea, could be the only Steam user in the entire country (as evidenced by the Steam Global Traffic Map). This theory gained traction when yesterday, it appeared as though the North Korean Steam user suddenly disappeared. However, this absence was temporary since the North Korean Steam user, who many believed to be Kim Jong Un himself, has now returned online. And coincidentally, “Stellar Blade” from South Korea is currently setting new records on PC gaming.
As a dedicated gamer, I was buzzing when news about the mysterious disappearance and swift return of the lone North Korean Steam user took over our community’s discussions. It all started when Kirby_coltellino shared the scoop, revealing that this long-time online gamer from North Korea had suddenly gone offline, a streak that began back in 2016. Fast forward several hours, and AmulyaCattyCat stepped up to confirm the good news: our friend was back online again! The Steam subreddit couldn’t contain their excitement as they warmly welcomed this gamer back into the fold.

Currently, a Steam user residing in North Korea appears to be active online, which you can verify using the Steam Global Traffic Map’s Satellite View. It’s important to note that internet and video games are under strict government control in North Korea, with foreign media (including games) generally banned. However, there may be exceptions if someone in authority wishes to explore these forbidden territories of popular interest.
Indeed, the humor flowed abundantly since many Steam users have speculated that the North Korean account might actually be Kim Jong Un himself. After all, few would dare to risk imprisonment for engaging with media considered hostile propaganda by the government. Given his status as a dictator, it’s reasonable to assume he’d be exempt from such charges. While we can’t verify this claim, its possibility is not entirely implausible.
Is That Kim Playing Stellar Blade?
In another scenario, it might be that this North Korean Steam user found themselves drawn to playing the game “Stellar Blade”. While the Steam Global Map doesn’t explicitly reveal what these particular users have downloaded, currently, “Stellar Blade”, developed by a South Korean studio, is among the most popular PC games available.
As a devoted follower, I’ve found myself joining the throng of Redditors who speculate that Kim Jong Un’s visit to South Korea was more than just a political move. Some have humorously suggested he might have been curious about what our longstanding adversary was up to, or perhaps he just needed a break and returned from a quick bathroom trip to find himself immersed in the world of Stellar Blade, or some other engaging game. Interestingly enough, it’s said that Kim Jong Un does take an interest in video games and Western media.

No matter who the returnee might be, Steam users are delighted to see someone considered an extraordinary gamer re-entering the world of video games once more.

“Welcome back Kim!” cheers ClassicXD23
It’s often joked that Kim Jong Un is skilled at Counter-Strike, but the truth is, as North Korea has limited external connections, its main point of interaction lies within Pyongyang.
It’s highly probable that there are several individuals using Steam in North Korea at any given moment, including those in power, foreign diplomats, and tourists. Yet, regardless of the location you use Steam, it will display Pyongyang as your location, giving the appearance that only one person is online.
