Just as classic survival horror games have seen a significant revival, so too are science fiction video games experiencing a surge in quality, with an impressive array of exciting sci-fi games either already out or scheduled for release.
Here are five captivating science fiction video games, either newly released or expected within the upcoming years. Please note that this selection is based on personal preference and not an objective ranking.
The Alters Is One of 11 bit Studios’ Best
Recently, games resembling those from 11 bit Studios (such as Frostpunk and This War of Mine) have been resonating with players due to their distinctive mix of management simulation and complex sci-fi narrative. The game delves into topics like consciousness, individuality, and quantum physics.
As the lone survivor from a mining expedition, you find yourself marooned on an unforgiving planet orbiting a three-star system. To ensure your survival, you’ll need to generate several copies of yourself, forming a self-sustaining team. Each replica will have pursued a distinct life course, and though all carry the same name, every ‘Alter’ exhibits its own individual personality and identity.

This sci-fi concept is remarkably challenging yet brilliantly executed, with intellectually stimulating content spanning three expansive acts.
I didn’t expect it, but this game has turned out to be a strong candidate for my Game of the Year. Playing it without any prior knowledge, not even watching trailers or reading reviews, was a wise choice. The game’s unique and captivating concept really resonated with me.
Death Stranding 2 Is Just as Wild as the First
Without further ado, Hideo Kojima’s follow-up to Death Stranding is nearly here, and true to form, it’s brimming with Kojima’s unique brand of eccentricity. In fact, he’s drawing on his affection for Metal Gear, introducing giant monster battles and a character who bears a striking resemblance to Solid Snake.

The story’s direction remains uncertain, which is exactly how it’s intended. Kojima’s thoughts are enigmatic, and this sequel appears to delve deeper into themes like post-apocalyptic governance and human relationships. All of this unfolds within the humorous label that some still use for it – a “walking simulator.

PRAGMATA Finally Returns from the Dead

After being in development for five long years, PRAGMATA has resurfaced, offering us a tantalizing sneak peek at what could become one of Capcom’s most bizarre and unique intellectual properties in recent memory. So far, all we have is brief gameplay clips, along with early impressions from content creators and journalists, but it’s enough to pique our curiosity. Indeed, this is quite a statement coming from Capcom.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Could Be the Next Mass Effect
When BioWare dropped the ball with their major science fiction titles, it left a space opera gap that needed to be filled. That’s where Osiris Reborn comes in, set within the universe of the popular Amazon Prime series The Expanse, and inspired by the acclaimed science fiction novels written by James S.A. Corey.

Occurring in the gap between Books 1 and 2, the game delves into the intricate political relationships among Earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt’s residents. Additionally, much like any compelling space saga, a puzzling extraterrestrial force, referred to as the Protomolecule, is the enigmatic element at the heart of it.

The Outer Worlds 2
Since Starfield didn’t manage to secure its spot among the elite of science fiction, Obsidian has re-entered the scene once more. The Outer Worlds 2 is set to bring back the studio’s signature style, combining intricate RPG gameplay with witty dialogue and biting social commentary.
Adventurers will travel to the secluded colony of Arcadia, blazing their unique trail through a narrative that splits in multiple directions, offering various options and conversations. It’s a distant land with a capitalist system gone awry, presenting opportunities for investigation, uprising, and comedic twists.
