Plot
Gulshan Arora, portrayed with subtle fervor by Aamir Khan, embodies an individual who often retreats from reality. However, isn’t escapism a common trait in many of us? The movie subtly encourages self-reflection, inviting us to face our inner struggles – the awkward truths and fears that we usually avoid. At its core, Sitaare Zameen Par revolves around Gulshan’s transformative journey, as he takes on the role of a basketball coach for a team of special children with dreams of competing in a championship. His experiences with the team, intertwined with his personal life and various events along the way, serve as the emotional foundation of the narrative. The film serves as a reminder that sometimes, simply participating is our greatest achievement. As for the ending? Let’s put it this way – ‘Endings can be the start of new beginnings.’
What Works
In the spirit of Taare Zameen Par’s successor, I find this film deeply resonating with today’s societal emotions. Its power lies in its relatability; each theater-goer is likely to take something personal away from it. The humor in Sitaare Zameen Par is subtly yet powerfully delivered, and the background music enhances key scenes without overshadowing them. The dialogues are potent without being didactic, striking a thoughtful balance.
I’d like to give a shout-out to the casting director who skillfully selected an acting group that exudes genuine emotion on screen. Moreover, the tranquil color scheme creates a serene and engaging viewing environment. Ultimately, Sitaare Zameen Par provides a precious opportunity for quiet introspection.
What Doesn’t Work
This movie is more about experiencing the emotions than dissecting it, and it delivers on that promise, albeit with a slightly prolonged second half. Instead, let’s focus on its strengths.
A glimpse of Aamir Khan from the film
Performances
In a refreshing yet familiar manner, Aamir Khan delivers an emotionally heavy performance that we’ve grown accustomed to. His character Gulshan is multifaceted, understated, and deeply moving. Genelia Deshmukh captivates with her nuanced facial expressions and powerful emotional aura as Suneeta, his wife in the story.
In my expert opinion, the ensemble of actors truly outshine with an authenticity that’s simply captivating: Ashish Pendse as Sunil, Aroush Datta playing Satbir, Aayush Bhansali in his role as Lotus, Rishi Shahani portraying Sharma Ji, GopiKrishnan K Verma as Guddu, Rishabh Jain bringing Raju to life, Vedant Sharma embodying Bantu, Simran Mangeshkar playing Golu, Samvit Desai taking on the character of Kareem, and Naman Misra in his role as Hargovind. It would be unjust to single out any one actor; each performance adds layers of depth and honesty to the storyline.
In a touching portrayal, Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari embodies the role of Preeto (Gulshan’s mother), leaving an indelible impression on viewers. Meanwhile, Gurpal Singh captivates effortlessly as Kartar Paaji.
Final Verdict
In Sitaare Zameen Par, your perspective on normality shifts beautifully. Amidst an ocean of suspenseful films and predictable blockbusters, this movie feels like a calming relief for a troubled mind. So, you might want to have some tissues handy? I’d suggest holding off on that – The end is not the end. You’ll understand why when you see the film yourself.
Sitaare Zameen Par is running in theatres near you from Friday, June 20, 2025.
