King Charles and Idris Elba Team Up on Netflix Doc About Charity That “Changed” Actor’s Life

King Charles and actor Idris Elba are collaborating on a brand-new Netflix documentary that delves into the influence of The King’s Trust, marking the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

Idris Elba was awarded a scholarship by the Trust (originally known as The Prince’s Trust, prior to Prince Charles becoming king), and this opportunity proved to be a small yet pivotal moment in his life. This grant allowed him to pursue his passion for acting.

The as-yet-unnamed documentary features Idris Elba, founder of the Elba Hope Foundation, joining hands with a monarch to provide unprecedented glimpses and insights into his charitable support for the Trust over five decades. At the core, Netflix emphasizes, are captivating narratives about some of the one million young individuals worldwide who have benefited from the charity’s assistance.

Elba stated, ‘The King’s Trust opened a door that transformed my life.’ In a phase where I lacked the means to chase my dreams, they provided genuine, practical assistance – even offering financial aid – which enabled me to make those initial strides forward in my professional journey.

He went on to say: “Today, via the Elba Hope Foundation, I am dedicated to providing similar chances to young individuals brimming with potential but limited by access. Globally, millions are still yearning for that single chance. This documentary highlights what can be achieved when that door finally opens and why The King’s Trust’s work continues to be crucial.

The filming for the upcoming documentary, set to premiere on Netflix in autumn 2026, is being produced by 22 Summers – a production firm established by Idris Elba and Diene Petterle. This project is helmed by director Ashley Francis-Roy.

Besides Petterle, the additional executive producers include Jonathan Smith and Eva Omaghomi. Clare Bradbury will assume the role of showrunner in this production.

Jonathan Townsend, U.K. head of The King’s Trust, emphasized that no one knows more about the effects of our work than those who have directly benefited from our support,” he said. “Idris, being a long-term supporter and past recipient of our aid himself, will likely offer a distinctive point of view in this pioneering documentary. He’ll delve into our narrative, revealing how our transformative work remains just as crucial today as it has always been.
