After the hit midquel “Alien: Romulus,” comes the prequel series “Alien: Earth,” which is the first TV adaptation of the franchise. As its name implies, this new show introduces the dangerous xenomorph to our home planet. The story takes place just two years before the original “Alien” movie, where Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and the Nostromo crew first encountered the xenomorph threat. However, it may be puzzling to determine its exact placement within the franchise timeline. To help you navigate through the “Alien” saga’s sequence, check out the video above for a comprehensive guide before diving into “Alien: Earth.
In 2024, the movie “Alien: Romulus” was launched, marking its place as the seventh main installment in the Alien series (excluding the two “Alien vs Predator” spin-offs). This film garnered a box office revenue of $351 million and an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, demonstrating that fans’ interest in the ongoing battle between humans and xenomorphs remains high, some four decades after the original Alien was released in 1979. Compared to its previous theatrical outing, 2017’s “Alien: Covenant,” which grossed $240.9 million globally and received a 65% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, “Romulus” was far more successful with its straightforward storyline and references to significant events in the first four movies of the series.
In contrast to Ripley being the iconic figure for the “Alien” series, the upcoming movie “Alien: Earth” will follow the pattern of the more recent films by delving into the past, exploring the lives of humans, androids, and aliens during the early stages of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation’s catastrophic creation.
Alien: Earth brings the battle home
Alien: Earth” introduces a thrilling twist to the series by focusing on Earth’s first face-to-face encounter with xenomorphs. The story revolves around Wendy (Sydney Chandler), an advanced humanoid robot, and her military team as they investigate a Weyland-Yutani space research vessel that has landed in Prodigy City after a crash. It’s suspected that the ship may carry xenomorphs or humans infected with chestbursters, both capable of endangering humanity. In this high-stakes mission, Wendy and her team must not only safeguard Prodigy City but potentially decide Earth’s future as well.
The trailers suggest that Wendy, who’s been informed she’s unique and meant for greatness, will encounter unforeseen terrors in this narrative. Series creator Noah Hawley appears committed to delivering this experience. Hawley explained in 2022 to Esquire that the series raises a classic sci-fi question: “Is humanity worthy of survival?” Starting August 12, viewers can watch the first two out of eight episodes on both FX and Hulu. Until then, check out the video above for a recap of everything the franchise has presented so far, ranging from its finest to its most disappointing, before “Alien: Earth” debuts.
