When Does Jurassic World Rebirth Take Place in the Franchise Timeline?

The thrilling era of bringing extinct species back to life is nearly here! By “bringing extinct species back to life,” we’re referring to the upcoming July 2nd premiere of Jurassic World Rebirth (you can grab tickets for this eagerly awaited summer blockbuster right over here).

The seventh installment in the continuous dinosaur series (currently streaming on Peacock!) is directed by Gareth Edwards, who has experience with massive, breathtaking creatures, having previously directed 2010’s film Monsters and the American remake of Godzilla in 2014. In this adventure, we embark on a voyage to Ile Saint-Hubert, a secluded island approximately 220 miles off the coast of South America that was once a research and development center for InGen. The mutated creatures created in their labs are said to hold the secret to an extraordinary medical discovery… or so it’s claimed.

Frank Marshall, a longtime producer of the Jurassic series, shares in Rebirth’s production notes that they aimed for a film that offered a fresh start while still being set within the universe of the previous films. This is achieved by blending heist-movie excitement with a creature-feature horror narrative, all while introducing new characters, settings, and dinosaurs, some of which have turned villainous. What excites Marshall about Rebirth is its ability to evoke the original Jurassic Park’s tone, a feat largely due to the talented creative team behind this project.

One aspect that stands out is that David Koepp, a well-respected screenwriter known for his work on both the 1993 original and 1997’s The Lost World, handled the scriptwriting. Additionally, Steven Spielberg once again takes up the role of executive producer, continuing the creative control he’s held since passing on directorial duties for Jurassic Park III to Joe Johnston over two decades ago.

When does Jurassic World Rebirth take place within the timeline of the Jurassic franchise?

The film titled “Jurassic World Rebirth” is placed five years following the events of “Jurassic World Dominion,” which debuted in the year 2022. Consequently, the storyline of “Rebirth” unfolds in the year 2027, marking two years into our future and 34 years after the unfortunate incidents depicted in “Jurassic Park.”

15 years ago, around 2009, dino-research was reportedly ongoing on Ile Saint-Hubert. However, something disastrous happened deep within the jungle that transformed this isolated island and its scientific facility into a forbidden territory, shrouded in mystery due to the terrifying aftermath of overzealous ambition.

Despite being taken over by Masrani Global Corporation in the late ’90s and the closure of Jurassic World theme park, there seems to be confusion about how InGen continued operations until 2009. Was it due to Simon Masrani, who took over after John Hammond, secretly granting access to Ile Saint-Hubert and allowing them to operate an illegal slush fund? Or could it be that a hidden faction within InGen managed to survive even through bankruptcy? As Marshall pointed out, this franchise has shown us that life finds ways to persist, even in the corporate world.
