In my humble opinion, Robert Eggers is rapidly establishing himself as the modern-day John Carpenter, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it!
As a movie buff, I must clarify that when I say he’s on his way to becoming a horror legend, I don’t mean in the traditional sense of a slasher king – that’s not really Eggers’s forte, and it never has been. However, what I am suggesting is that he’s rapidly gaining recognition as a horror icon, and quite frankly, everything he touches seems to be gilded with success. It consistently performs well and is always impeccably crafted.
I’m quite fond of the most thrilling horror films, and many of my top picks are from this Director’s repertoire. For instance, one of my favorite A24 horror productions, “The Witch,” is his creation. Of course, “Nosferatu” (2024) was a major highlight as well. Interestingly, according to Deadline, Eggers is currently working on an adaptation of “A Christmas Carol.
In the works of Eggers, we have faith – despite ‘A Christmas Carol’ not being directly connected to horror. Yet, his ability to breathe life into a classic Christmas narrative has sparked thoughts about another holiday folklore that I believe Eggers could excel in telling – let me explain.
I Love A Christmas Carol Adaptation As Much As Anyone Else
As a film enthusiast, let me clarify at the outset that this discussion won’t involve me criticizing Robert Eggers for choosing to adapt “A Christmas Carol.” I have no intention of doing so.
Frankly speaking, I wholeheartedly rely on Eggers’ work because he consistently delivers. He invests the necessary time and energy to produce not only films, but cinematic masterpieces with captivating visuals and unique narratives that have left me spellbound for quite some time now. Granted, they may not always be front-runners for awards, but I believe this could be due to a potential prejudice within the Academy against horror films.
Regardless of the choice, he’s gifted us with remarkable movies, and he’d undoubtedly do a fantastic job adapting “A Christmas Carol“.
Among all the adaptations of “A Christmas Carol” available, there’s certainly fierce competition to surpass. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if he decided to tackle this project. I think he would skillfully add a chilling twist to the three ghosts and perhaps develop Marley in a way that deepens his darkness beyond our current understanding of the character.
And with Willem Dafoe as the lead choice to play Ebeneezer Scrooge? Eggers is already cooking.
Yet, another intriguing Christmas tale exists which, should Eggers choose to continue his festive narratives, offers an opportunity for him to elevate the storytelling experience further.

But Imagine If Robert Eggers Did a Krampus Adaptation?
That’s right, I’m going to be a complete monster here.
For people not familiar with Krampus, he’s a character deeply rooted in Central and Eastern European folklore. He typically appears alongside Saint Nicholas. Unlike Santa Claus who rewards good kids with presents, Krampus serves as his counterpart, meting out punishment to naughty children instead.
In any depiction, Krampus is undeniably terrifying, often featuring horns reminiscent of the devil and teeth that seem capable of tearing through any living being. Interestingly enough, there’s already been a horror movie made about him, called “Krampus.” It’s both entertaining and quite gory.
However, there’s an inexplicable aspect about this story that I believe Eggers could masterfully elevate. He has the uncanny knack for preserving folktale elements while crafting a level of terror so profoundly chilling, it would captivate a fresh wave of monster enthusiasts and apprehensive viewers alike – all thanks to his cinematic genius.

That Monster Would Look Terrifying
This is also just a side thing, but he would absolutely make Krampus terrifying.
I suspect he might replicate the style from Nosferatu’s movie role, where the character wasn’t fully revealed until the final scenes, and let me tell you, that was quite unsettling with all his grotesque features. Just thinking about it now gives me a bit of a shiver.
Yet, that image continues to linger in my memory, and it’s only Erikson who possesses such a twisted imagination to reimagine traditional monsters in an entirely new light. I can envision the director skillfully keeping Krampus concealed in the shadows, until he makes his chilling entrance towards the end, striking fear into the hearts of the main characters. His horns, shaped like wicked sickles, and teeth as sharp as kitchen knives, dripped with a grotesque saliva and yearning to mete out punishment for any misdeeds.
That’s a monster that would be horrifying – and I am here for that.

It Would Create Almost A New Legend Surrounding The Character Like It Did for Nosferatu
This film is likely to generate considerable excitement, and I believe it will resonate strongly with my generation in particular.
As a film enthusiast, I can attest that in his own words, Eggers acknowledged the impact of “SpongeBob SquarePants” – he thanked it for sparking interest in Nosferatu among today’s youth, enticing them to cinema screens. Pair this with an exceptional ensemble cast, and you have a perfect recipe for capturing the imagination of a new generation.
Currently, my generation is well-acquainted with Krampus, largely due to the movie released a decade ago (wow, I can’t believe it’s been that long! It makes me feel quite old). Although it may not rank among the greatest horror films of all time, it remains an entertaining watch that transports you on a thrilling journey and introduces you to a fresh folklore tale, which we can share from one generation to another.
Given our familiarity with his work and the fact that Eggers excels at delivering chilling cinema, pairing him with Krampus would undoubtedly be a massive hit. Moreover, it offers a perfect reason to revisit cinemas during the festive season of Christmas.

I Think It Could End Up Becoming One Of The Best Christmas Horror Movies
Do I think Eggers is totally going to rock A Christmas Carol and its adaptation? Heck, yes, I do.
Yet, Eggers seems particularly suited for a Krampus remake. In truth, such a production could very well emerge as one of the top-tier Christmas horror films. Granted, it might seem unusual to link the cheeriest holiday with something as unsettling as horror, but I genuinely believe this could prove highly successful.
Regardless of how things unfold, it’s going to take some time before we witness such a spectacle on the silver screen. In the meantime, I can’t help but fantasize about it. And as each day passes, my excitement grows for the upcoming A Christmas Carol remake.
