Adam Driver Pitches Egomaniacal Utopian Future in Official ‘Megalopolis’ Trailer

As a film enthusiast who’s traversed through the labyrinth of cinema history, I find myself captivated by the grandeur and audacity of Francis Ford Coppola’s latest masterpiece, “Megalopolis.” Having grown up in the shadow of the silver screen, I’ve witnessed the metamorphosis of Coppola from a visionary auteur to a tenacious titan, unwilling to let go of his dreams.

In the recently released trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed film “Megalopolis,” Adam Driver portrays a forward-thinking visionary aiming to rebuild New York City into an ideal, utopian future. This ambitious plan involves challenging and overthrowing an existing ruling class.

“Cesar’s character in the film, set in a modern-day reimagining of the Roman Empire on the verge of collapse, expresses his aspirations for humanity from his offices within the Chrysler Building. He warns against letting present circumstances undermine long-term possibilities. In this story, Cesar confronts the pragmatic mayor Franklyn Cicero, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito.”

Cicero inherited a fiscal disaster from the previous administration and wants to build a casino complex to boost revenue for modern New York City. And torn between Cesar and Cicero is Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s independently-minded daughter facing divided loyalties.

The new trailer emphasizes the magnitude and drive behind Coppola’s personal endeavor, depicting Madison Square Garden transformed into a Colosseum for gladiatorial battles and chariot races. As stated by David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter in his film critique, “Caesar’s objective, which is at once noble and self-aggrandizing, mirrors the relentless perseverance of Francis Ford Coppola in bringing this movie to life no matter the expense.”

Initially penned by the renowned director back in 1983, the movie “Megalopolis” is estimated to have cost an impressive $120 million to produce. A portion of this budget was sourced from the sale of a substantial share of the director’s wine business. The film will finally be released in cinemas on September 27, following its debut at Cannes and North American premiere in Toronto, thanks to the joint efforts of Lionsgate and Imax.
