As a long-time fan of Adam Sandler’s comedies, I must say that his latest offering, “Hubie Halloween,” feels like a delightful reunion with old friends. It’s been a while since I’ve watched a film that I could comfortably leave playing in the background while getting on with my day. The light-heartedness and absence of excessive gore make it perfect for family viewing, especially during the Halloween season.

In the continuation of his fruitful collaboration with Netflix, Adam Sandler crafted a Halloween-themed comedy titled “Hubie Halloween”. The movie, which quickly climbed to the top of the streaming platform’s charts for nine straight days, was a hit among Sandler’s dedicated fanbase. Although it didn’t quite win over critics or the general public, it resonated with the most devoted Sandler fans by revisiting the lovable, yet somewhat simple-minded characters that were his early works’ hallmark.

In the movie Hubie Halloween, Adam Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, a meek and somewhat intellectually challenged resident of Salem, Massachusetts. Despite being ridiculed by many in the town and looked down upon by his former colleagues on the police force, Hubie’s love for Halloween drives him to spend the night ensuring the safety of the town as the official Halloween Monitor. However, when a new neighbor with a werewolf-like nature arrives just as townsfolk begin to vanish, Hubie embarks on a mission to solve a mysterious curse under the moonlight and safeguard the town while uncovering the fate of its missing citizens.

Despite a notable misstep, the movie remarkably found its way onto the list of top reviews for Adam Sandler’s live-action comedies. Hubie Halloween showcases Sandler utilizing his strengths, an approach that may not resonate with all viewers but remains entertaining enough for casual spectators and die-hard Sandler enthusiasts alike.

In simpler terms, the movie “Hubie Halloween” might leave some viewers unsatisfied because it lacks depth. It doesn’t fully commit to being funny or scary. The jokes aren’t particularly memorable, and the frightening elements aren’t really scary. Overall, it’s a rather bland experience. However, it attempts to explore themes like courage, self-acceptance, and community values, but these ideas are not thoroughly developed.

Instead of delving into the themes it initially promises, the movie veers off course by featuring sequences of pranks and introducing quirky characters who lack significance for the narrative. By the end of the film, none of the characters undergo any transformation, which feels like a wasted opportunity. Similarly, the city setting, with its Halloween-obsessed protagonist having roots in the Salem witch trials, could have been used to explore Hubie’s character and the ominous history of Salem; however, this potential depth is overlooked in favor of shallow appearances that do little to advance the aimless storyline.

Although it may have its flaws, the movie remains enjoyable enough to keep you engaged. Adam Sandler revisits his charming, down-on-his-luck persona that was a hallmark of his earlier projects. The storyline never delves too deeply, making it effortless to follow along with minimal focus. This makes it an ideal film for background viewing, much like other Netflix productions. Sandler and the cast demonstrate their dedication to their characters and the overall narrative, which results in enjoyable character interactions. The movie has a cheerful tone. Its lack of excessive violence and intense scenes caters to a broad audience, enabling families with older children (rated PG-13) to watch it comfortably without disturbance. This is quite remarkable for a Halloween-themed story.

As a die-hard fan of Adam Sandler’s comedies, I can say that Hubie Halloween seems to fit right in with his usual style, particularly on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, this means it didn’t exactly hit the mark with critics, as it scored a disappointing 52% from them and only 48% from audiences, making it officially ‘rotten’. The movie also received a 53% score from Metacritic, with critics describing it as overly silly, sketchy, and stuffed to the brim. However, if you’re a fan of Sandler’s earlier lovable goofball characters like Billy Madison, The Waterboy, or Happy Gilmore, then you should find plenty to enjoy in this film.

Fans on social media have described it as both silly and enjoyable, even going so far as to say it’s a must-see for Halloween. The movie is similar to the classic Ernest films from the 90s (such as “Ernest Scared Stupid” and “Ernest Goes to Jail”). Just like Hubie, Ernest is a simple-minded character who always tries to do good but often gets in over his head. There have been whispers that Netflix might make a “Hubie Halloween 2,” but that hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. However, fans of Adam Sandler can rejoice, as the streamer has confirmed he’ll be back in action in the upcoming “Happy Gilmore” sequel.

Through his Netflix production agreement, Sandler has crafted a series of successful movies, moving away from the zany characters he was previously recognized for. Recently, he’s ventured into genres such as mysteries (like “Murder Mystery”) and dramas (“Spaceman”), stepping boldly out of his comedic stereotype roles. Although it’s wonderful to witness Sandler expanding into more dramatic performances, his dedication to delivering roles that cater to his long-term fans is equally noteworthy.

In addition to Adam Sandler, “Hubie Halloween” boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring Julie Bowen from “Modern Family,” Kevin James of “The King of Queens,” and Ray Liotta known for “Shades of Blue.” Notable guest stars include Rob Schneider, Kenan Thompson, Steve Buscemi, Tim Meadows, and Maya Rudolph. As of now, you can enjoy “Hubie Halloween” by streaming it on Netflix.
