‘After 10 Years In Harry Potter I Was Ready To Do Something Else.’ Neville Actor Matthew Lewis Gets Real About What Changed For Him After Starring In The Wizarding Franchise

As a hardcore Harry Potter fan who grew up alongside the magical world it created, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and excitement whenever there’s news about the beloved franchise. Matthew Lewis, who embodied Neville Longbottom so perfectly, recently shared his thoughts on life after Potter and possibly reprising his role in the new series.

The enchanting Harry Potter universe and brand continues to thrive in the present day. There’s quite a stir surrounding Max’s upcoming Harry Potter TV production, which is currently under development, as well as the Fantastic Beasts series, and the ongoing affection for the original series. The actors associated with it are showing no signs of slowing down. Matthew Lewis, who portrayed Neville Longbottom, has lately discussed his life post-Potter and expressed his thoughts about reprising Neville in the upcoming series.

Over the past weekend, the 35-year-old participated in the Rhode Island Comic Con and shared insights about the ten years he spent working on set. He discussed various topics such as how the new cast members bonded and established a supportive environment for each other, along with his experiences following the conclusion of the original Harry Potter series.

According to People, Lewis expressed some hesitation while transitioning from Neville Longbottom towards his career in the industry, as he prepared to leave Hogwarts. However, he was eager to try new things and discover fresh opportunities, he mentioned.

Initially, my enthusiasm for the possibility was quite high, but given my brief focus span, it’s likely why I’ve never committed to a long-term career. After spending ten years in Harry Potter, I felt ready for a change and was not inclined towards undertakings that could potentially spawn numerous follow-ups.

Devoting a full decade to a single series can be quite an extensive undertaking, particularly for a child actor. After leaving the world of wizardry behind, Lewis has been open about his personal experiences and how his role as Longbottom continues to impact him, despite having built up an impressive body of work following Part 2.

The original Harry Potter franchise ran from 2001-2011 and the Fantastic Beasts series ran from 2016-2022 and can be a lot to keep in chronological order. This new Max show has received a lot of opinions for its interest in expanding the seven book series but the reason why seems commendable. As an OG fan of the movies, it feels odd, especially with the cast remembering Maggie Smith, who played Minerva McGonagall earlier this year.

As a die-hard fan, I’m beyond excited that the new Harry Potter series could drop in 2026! Lewis hinted there might be a reunion of the original gang at Hogwarts, but it’s still up in the air if he’ll make an appearance. Fingers crossed he doesn’t end up with another magic character dogging his heels for another ten years like last time. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

To enjoy the entire collection of the classic Harry Potter films or the Fantastic Beasts series, consider subscribing to Max or Hulu Plus.
