For more than ten years, the television series “S.W.A.T.” has had a rocky ride on CBS, and it’s not only due to the character arc of Shemar Moore’s Hondo Harrleson. In fact, the show was cancelled and then reinstated two times before CBS ended its run again in early March, and this termination appears to be permanent. Although Moore remains optimistic that Netflix might take up “S.W.A.T.”, remarks from two of his fellow actors have me considering the upcoming finale.
Anna Enger Ritch and Chicago Fire’s Annie Ilonzeh, who portray Officer Zoe Powell and Officer Devin Gamble, spoke with TVLine prior to the show’s cancellation, building anticipation for the Season 8 finale. However, now that it has been announced that the Season 8 finale will indeed be the series finale, their comments about that final episode hold greater significance. Ritch expressed:
This series is so captivating, you won’t be able to tear yourself away from it. The numerous plotlines, character development, and emotional depth ensure there’s always more to explore and discover. It’ll leave you yearning for additional stories to unfold.
It’s not unexpected that Anna Enger Ritch is excited, given she spoke about the finale before the announcement of the third and likely last cancellation of S.W.A.T. Executive producer Shawn Ryan previously hinted at a possible Season 9, and fans might have continued growing their fandom during the off-seasons due to the show’s availability on Netflix.
In Season 8, fresh recruit Annie Ilonzeh commented on and expanded upon Ritch’s hint regarding the season finale of S.W.A.T., implying her involvement in some way.
You exclaim, ‘Wow, that occurred just now!’ And, ‘Hang on, I require even more!’ We never wrap things up neatly. Instead, we keep you speculating and eager for what’s next.
It appears that the series might conclude with an open-ended finale, leaving fans anxious about its resolution. Prior to the Season 7 finale last year, Shemar Moore characterized the episode as one that could serve as “either our farewell or a fresh start.” Contrarily, Anna Enger Ritch and Annie Ilonzeh’s comments don’t suggest an ending that would be considered a farewell.
Indeed, with several episodes remaining until the series concludes, let’s not jump to conclusions about S.W.A.T.‘s final act just yet. It’s possible that a different platform might decide to continue the story for Season 9 before the CBS finale airs in May, so fingers crossed!
Shemar More made some solid points when he pitched Netflix as a new home for S.W.A.T. as a streaming original, pointing out that the show quickly became the #1 series on the platform, and then stayed in the Top 15 for several months. While he showed gratitude to CBS for his successful career across The Young and the Restless, Criminal Minds, and of course S.W.A.T., he was clear on Instagram that he’s not ready to give up on Hondo just yet.
Could it be that the final episode, reportedly mind-blowing by Anna Enger Ritch and Annie Ilonzeh, will indeed mark the end of S.W.A.T.? Only time will tell, but for now, catch the latest episodes from Season 8 on CBS every Friday at 10 p.m. ET. Additionally, you can revisit previous seasons currently streaming on Netflix.
