As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Bethesda has been a pioneer in crafting immersive, expansive worlds. However, their latest offering, Starfield, pales in comparison to one of their most iconic games – Skyrim.
About a year following the debut of Starfield, Bethesda unveiled the Shattered Space expansion pack. This was an exciting update for those who love space exploration and role-playing games.
Prior to its launch, Bethesda Game Studios made several enhancements aimed at improving user experience, such as the Creations Kit for Starfield, which sparked growing excitement among players. Subsequently, they unveiled the intriguing land vehicle REV-8, further fueling anticipation for Shattered Space.
At Gamescom 2024, Bethesda unveiled further insights into Shattered Space, teasing that this expansion would significantly alter players’ viewpoints regarding the game. However, the impact was not as Bethesda had anticipated. Instead, the DLC fundamentally transformed how players perceive Starfield.
The game Shattered Space lacked soulfulness, and despite the attempts to evoke appeal through trailers and screenshots, it couldn’t compensate for all the void in Va’ruun’kai. Even with the addition of stunning points of interest, gamers are now rating Steam reviews as mixed, with many commenting that Shattered Space feels “more like a vast, open, and desolate Starfield.
At first, players assumed that their choices made during the DLC missions would significantly influence Starfield’s main storyline. However, this additional content falls short compared to the outstanding DLCs created by the studio in games like Skyrim (Dawnguard) and Oblivion (Shivering Isles).
Though Shattered Space, a less-than-impressive release from Bethesda, is their latest offering in recent times, it doesn’t diminish the fact that they have produced some of the most iconic games in video game history.
Among video games, The Elder Scrolls series consistently ranks among the most beloved. Each new addition pushes the boundaries of gaming tech and hardware capabilities. Interestingly, Skyrim, launched back in 2011, continues to outshine Starfield, a game developed using Bethesda’s cutting-edge Creation Engine and released as recently as 2023.
On Steam, Skyrim: Special Edition boasts nearly twice as many active players as Starfield, based on data from Steam Charts. Although Steam statistics don’t provide a comprehensive measure of a game’s popularity across various platforms, the continued high number of Skyrim players suggests one clear point: Bethesda saw its zenith during the release of Skyrim.
Skyrim Was Peak Bethesda
2010 was a lean year for exceptional role-playing games (RPGs), largely because action shooter games were dominating the market. However, in 2011, Skyrim significantly shifted players’ perceptions about what high-quality video games could be.
From combat mechanics to storytelling, and even bugs and annoying dialogues, many players felt that Skyrim was the epitome of how fantasy games should feel. Eventually, Skyrim won the most-coveted Game Of The Year award, cementing it as one of Bethesda’s greatest titles.
In contrast to the height of Skyrim’s fame, neither Shattered Space nor Starfield as a whole could compare. Although updates and a fishing feature were added, even with these changes, Skyrim outperforms Starfield in nearly all aspects.
Exploring the Skyrim region offered a rich, immersive gaming adventure, teeming with lively activity almost everywhere you looked across the vast open world.
13 years ago, Skyrim embodied Bethesda’s signature formula beautifully, a formula that still resonates today. Given the excitement surrounding Starfield and the prolonged anticipation for The Elder Scrolls 6, another iteration of Skyrim might prove to be an ideal interim offering from Bethesda.
Skyrim 2 Prequel and Sequel – Two Things That May Work
Absolutely! It’s quite possible that The Elder Scrolls 6 could be released soon, which means it’s likely that Bethesda is putting all their efforts into this upcoming game. But, considering what made Skyrim such a fun and enduring experience even after all these years might also be beneficial.
It’s possible that Bethesda has given this idea some consideration, and should a new Skyrim game (either prequel or sequel) materialize, it could attract a wave of returning fans from the Bethesda Game Studios family.
In brief, the Elder Scrolls series is vastly extensive, encompassing each region’s unique culture as well as the history of Mundus and the overall narrative. There’s always a tale ready to unfold within the Elder Scrolls universe. The Elder Scrolls Online effectively captures the sensation of being a Tamriel resident, and Skyrim shares that experience too.
The narrative, encompassing the downloadable content (DLC), is ideal for crafting fresh tales and myths that fall within the Elder Scrolls series’ established lore. Whether a potential Skyrim storyline delves into what transpired before the game’s timeline or explores events following the conclusion of the main campaign and DLC, remains to be seen.
Skyrim 2 as a Prequel – A Blast From The Past
A prequel to Skyrim might take us back in time before the events of Elder Scrolls V, but it won’t be exactly like the previous games. It could center around an earlier version of the Skyrim region or delve deeper into how the Blades organization originated. Regardless, for any fan of The Elder Scrolls series, uncovering more about Skyrim’s past would be exciting.
Skyrim 2 as a Sequel – A New Era
Bethesda has been rather secretive about the narrative of Elder Scrolls VI. There’s speculation that it may take place in either Valenwood or Elsweyr, but if they require additional time to craft their primary sequel, a follow-up for the beloved Elder Scrolls title could be an alternative.
In a future Skyrim game, players could delve deeper into the past of the Dwemer civilization, uncovering secret dungeons hidden throughout the region. Alternatively, Bethesda might choose to flesh out the Dragonborn lore, shedding light on the present-day circumstances of the Greybeards. The Elder Scrolls V offers a wealth of opportunities to share additional tales about Skyrim’s history and relics.
Although we might have to endure a lengthy wait for The Elder Scrolls 6, and Skyrim 2 may continue to be an unfulfilled wish for some, the original game remains enjoyable even after over a decade since its release.
Starfield was outstanding across multiple aspects, providing an exceptional gaming experience that many Bethesda enthusiasts cherished. Nonetheless, no game surpasses the enduring charm and iconic status of Skyrim. Its timeless allure ensures continued enjoyment for future generations.
