Alan Alda, Mike Farrell Among Those Paying Tribute to Loretta Swit: “A Supremely Talented Actor”

Hollywood is paying tribute to Loretta Swit after news of her death was announced Friday.

Based on a police report, it is believed that the actress who starred in M*A*S*H passed away due to what appears to be natural causes at her residence in New York City. Her representative, Harlan Boll, made this announcement publicly.

Over a span of 11 incredible seasons on the iconic TV show, M*A*S*H, I had the honor to grace the screen in all but 11 episodes, earning me two Emmys for my portrayal of Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan. Interestingly enough, I was nominated for an Emmy each year I appeared, with the exception of season one. Once my time in the medical war drama came to a close, I embarked on a successful film career, featuring in movies like Freebie and the Bean (1974), Race With the Devil (1975), S.O.B. (1981) and BoardHeads (1998).

On X, Alan Alda, who starred alongside Loretta Swit for many years on the popular show “M*A*S*H”, paid tribute to her. He stated that she was an exceptionally gifted actor, and rightfully earned all ten Emmy nominations and her two wins. However, what truly set Loretta apart was not just her acting abilities, but her ability to create her role. On Fridays, she would often collaborate with the writing team, helping them transform a one-dimensional stereotype into a fully fleshed out character, complete with depth and ambition. The day the script came out, they celebrated, renaming her character from “Hot Lips” to “Margaret.” Loretta made the most of her time here on earth.

Mike Farrell, who entered the show during its fourth season, posted a picture of the deceased actress on Instagram with the caption, “Loretta… 1937-2025.” (implied: Rest in peace)

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Journey Gunderson, head of the National Comedy Center, commended Loretta Swit for her revolutionary portrayal of Margaret ‘Hot Lips’ Houlihan. This character was not only heartfelt and funny but also strong, embodying one of TV comedy’s longest-lasting roles. Swit’s talent went far beyond this iconic figure, as she excelled in various stage and screen projects that highlighted her intelligence, adaptability, and enthusiasm. This legacy continues to thrive, thanks to the cultural influence of M*A*S*H, a show we honor at the National Comedy Center.
