Alexander McQueen SS25 Turns the Irish Banshee Into Crystal

As a seasoned gamer who has navigated through countless digital worlds, I must say that Seán McGirr’s Spring 2025 collection for Alexander McQueen feels like stepping into a captivating video game level with an intriguing narrative. The banshee, a creature deeply rooted in Irish folklore, is not just a fashion statement here, but a symbol of personal growth and a testament to the power of our past experiences.

On Saturday night, Sean McGirr unveiled his sophomore line for Alexander McQueen at Paris École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Here, Tom Scott constructed an intentionally tense setting – a steel path protruding from a massive structure, and emerging from under shattered tiles – as the stage for McGirr’s Spring 2025 designs inspired by banshees to make their debut to the world.

The Irish designer expressed that the banshee, with its roots in McQueen’s history and also being a tale from his childhood, holds a profoundly personal significance for him. He recalls his mother narrating stories of the ghostly spirit’s lonely cries as a child. To him, she now embodies something authentic and powerful in the present.

McGirr’s grand fashion statement resonated with a mix of British music spanning various decades and styles. The collection showcased an array of designs: bespoke modifications of the classic British suit, delicate cobweb lace accents skillfully sewn by hand, exaggerated shoulders that were pinched and elevated, soft collars reminiscent of Jermyn Street dress shirts with intricate cursive scripting, and silhouettes crafted from mohair woven in local mills.

McGirr used silks that were personally treated, such as jacquard-woven washed silk organza and silk creponne in various soft colors, to design his elegant eveningwear: royal collars on jackets and fitting bodices on fluffy dresses were among the elements. Embroidery, conversely, adorned both coats and gowns, with original banshee artwork reimagined using silver metal sequins, silver bullion, and 3D gold metal accents on an organza foundation.

The ultimate appearance of the line – a shimmering, crystalline being – embodied the spirit of the banshee, symbolizing a guiding influence on the future evolution of Alexander McQueen by McGirr.
