As a seasoned film critic with decades of movie-watching experience under my belt, I must say that Varsity Blues remains one of those timeless gems that continues to resonate even after 25 years. The news about James Van Der Beek‘s battle with colorectal cancer has been deeply saddening, but the support from his fellow cast members like Ali Larter is heartwarming to see.
It’s hard for millennials to fathom that it’s been 25 years since “Varsity Blues” first hit screens. Despite James Van Der Beek’s continued presence in Hollywood, his recent announcement of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer has stirred sadness and disbelief across the industry and among fans alike. Notably, one of his “Varsity Blues” co-stars, Ali Larter, has also been keeping busy, particularly with her role alongside Billy Bob Thornton in the new Taylor Sheridan series, “Landman.” Reflecting on their successful high-school football movie (which included the late Paul Walker), Larter shared her thoughts with MovieWeb.
I sincerely hope James fares well. It’s been years since we last crossed paths,” Larter shared with us. “Amy Smart remains a cherished friend from way back. We lived together in Milan before our roles in ‘Varsity Blues,’ an unforgettable experience. I first met Amy in Italy, then I relocated to Los Angeles where she was my only companion. Later, we both landed the roles in ‘Varsity Blues.’ She’s truly one of the best, and I consider myself fortunate.” Larter further added:
Reflecting on this remarkable cinematic masterpiece, I can’t help but acknowledge the extraordinary team that breathed life into it. Time has flown by, and it’s hard to believe that a quarter of a century has passed since its creation. Our hearts will always ache for Paul, whose absence is deeply felt. Life carries on, yet the void he left behind is undiminished, making each day a little more challenging.
Fan-Girling Over Taylor Sheridan
After many years, Larter continues to capture attention with her captivating on-screen appearances, the most recent being Taylor Sheridan’s show, titled “Landman”. In this West Texas-set series, Larter portrays Thornton’s ex-wife and offers numerous humorous moments, adding a touch of comedy to an otherwise tense drama. The show delves deep into the oil industry, even bringing viewers close to the oil rig workers as they face occasional disasters in this particularly hazardous profession. Before “Landman”, Larter expressed her admiration for Sheridan’s work, which includes several critically-acclaimed films and a substantial body of small-screen projects, such as “Yellowstone” and its spinoffs like “1883” and “1923”.
I am truly captivated by his work. I believe him to be an exceptionally gifted storyteller, as evidenced by his masterpieces such as Sicario, Wind River, and Hell or High Water, along with his extraordinary TV series […] I find the female characters he develops to be particularly compelling – they are complex, brave, and vulnerable. There’s a depth to them that is truly captivating. He allows women to embody their sensuality without restraint and take control of their own narrative […] It’s rare to see this portrayal nowadays. Having the opportunity to collaborate on one of his projects was an absolute joy.
Starting this Sunday, you can stream Landman, produced by MTV Entertainment, exclusively on Paramount+. The series will run until January 12, 2025, and here’s a link to start watching right away: [Link]
