Gangubai Kathiawadi became what it became for how great Alia Bhatt acted in Bhansali’s directorial. Tamasha managed to entertain us, thanks to Ranbir Kapoor’s versatility in portraying complex characters. We have curated a list of films with epic performances that are available to stream on Netflix.

6 films with epic performances you can watch on Netflix and feel proud of Hindi cinema

1. Gangubai Kathiawadi- Alia Bhatt

Under the guidance of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Alia Bhatt took on the lead role in Gangubai Kathiawadi. In this film, Alia gave a remarkable performance as a madame running a brothel in Kamathipura, leaving viewers spellbound. Her portrayal accurately conveyed the intricacies of her character.

Throughout the movie, Alia’s portrayal of Gangubai’s emotions is incredibly authentic. In a particular scene, after many years, Gangubai speaks with her mother following her father’s death. During this call, she learns about the limited time they have left to talk. Alia masterfully demonstrates Gangubai’s emotional depth in not being able to say goodbye to her father one last time. Her line, “Mother’s name isn’t enough, let’s invoke Father’s name Devanand,” underscores her outstanding performance.

2. Tamasha-Ranbir Kapoor

In the movie “Tamasha,” directed by Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir Kapoor delivers one of his best performances yet. He portrays the character of Ved Vardhan Sahni, a man grappling with internal struggles and societal pressures. Ranbir’s acting in this film showcases his remarkable versatility. His ability to convincingly switch between playing the carefree Ved and the movie character Don in Corsica, and then revealing his true self in Delhi, demonstrates the broad spectrum of his acting talent.

In a twist, when Deepika Padukone’s character, Tara, rejects his proposal due to his lack of carefreeness, Ranbir’s character demonstrates his internal struggles. He becomes irritable, agitated, and perplexed instead.

3. Guru- Abhishek Bachchan

In Mani Ratnam’s movie “Guru,” Abhishek Bachchan’s portrayal of Gurukant Desai is highly praised for his sincere acting. As Gurukant, Abhishek depicted the story of a young man with aspirations for success in life. From humble beginnings in Gujarat, his character rises to become a renowned industrialist after an inspiring journey on screen.

Apart from captivating the audience with his exceptional acting abilities in the 2007 film “Guru,” Abhishek underwent a remarkable physical transformation by significantly increasing his weight specifically for his role during the movie’s second half. He masterfully portrayed a wide range of emotions, including arrogance, remorse, affection, and determination.

4. Mary Kom- Priyanka Chopra

For several years, Priyanka Chopra has been a significant figure in Hindi cinema. However, it was her biographical sports film, “Mary Kom,” that left audiences astonished. In the 2014 movie, Priyanka received widespread acclaim for her portrayal of India’s boxing champion, Mary Kom. The actress underwent rigorous training and even learned boxing specifically for this role under the direction of Omung Kumar.

In the movie “Mary Kom,” Priyanka demonstrated her commitment to the character by accurately portraying aspects of Mary Kom’s persona and her experiences as a female boxer in a predominantly male environment. She skillfully captured the finer details of Mary Kom’s character and her approach to overcoming obstacles.

5. Qala- Triptii Dimri

Under Anvita Dutt’s direction, the psychological drama movie titled Qala hit the screens in 2022. Triptii Dimri and Babil Khan took on the lead roles, with Triptii portraying Qala Manjushree and Babil as Jagan Batwal. Notably, Swastika Mukherjee was also part of the cast in a significant role. During its premiere, Triptii’s portrayal of a young singer grappling with past traumas drew praise from the audience for her exceptional performance.

In the realm of music, Triptii’s character grapples with deep emotional struggles, having been deeply hurt when her mother prioritized Jagan over her. This abandonment left a lasting trauma. Triptii’s ability to portray vulnerability was exceptional, and she convincingly enacted her singing scenes, making it appear as if she was genuinely singing on screen.

6. Rajneeti- Katrina Kaif

Back in the early days of my career, I, a star-struck fan, would swoon over Katrina Kaif in those delightful romantic comedies like Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Welcome, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and others. But then came 2010, a year that left me utterly amazed as the captivating Katrina transformed into the powerful Indu Pratap Singh in Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti.

In the movie “Rajneeti,” Katrina Kaif portrays a character named Indu, who is a passionate young woman deeply enamored with politician Samar, played by Ranbir Kapoor. Tragically, her lover betrays her, leading to heartache. Despite this, Indu rises through the political ranks and eventually becomes the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. One of Katrina’s most compelling performances in the 2010 political thriller was her delivery of a powerful speech.

Besides her, the rest of the cast in Rajneeti, namely Ajay Devgn, Nana Patekar, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, and Manoj Bajpayee, all delivered their parts effectively under Jha’s direction.

Have you watched these films on Netflix yet? Don’t miss Gangubai Kathiawadi for sure.
