After receiving generally positive feedback for the Alien prequels, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, Fede Álvarez’s latest addition to the franchise, Alien: Romulus, has played a significant role in reaffirming the sci-fi horror series as one of the top-tier choices within its genre.
Nestled in the timeline between the occurrences of the first “Alien” movie and its successor, “Aliens”, the film “Romulus” skillfully recreates some of the most memorable scenes from the original two films, while simultaneously introducing fresh horrors for audiences to experience. From the realistic special effects to the captivating portrayals of the new characters who drive the narrative, “Romulus” has raised the bar high for what a new “Alien” film might offer.
As I eagerly anticipate the potential return of the enigmatic world of ‘Romulus’, director Álvarez has hinted at exciting developments in a possible sequel. In an exclusive chat with Empire Magazine, he acknowledged that the first film leaned towards the darker, more iconic tones that have made the Alien franchise legendary. He further suggested that the sequel will delve deeper into uncharted territories for the characters we met in ‘Romulus’, particularly Cailee Spaeny’s intriguing character, Rain, who was the last one standing by the film’s end. Exciting times lie ahead!
We’re thrilled about the potential journey. We’ve nearly ticked off all the items on my wishlist for Romulus, rediscovering aspects I hadn’t noticed in a while. Now, wherever we venture next, we step into unexplored territories. I believe it will be exhilarating to traverse with characters from this film into an area of the Alien universe that we’ve yet to explore, uncovering secrets never before revealed.
Future ‘Alien’ Films Could Follow in the Footsteps of The Prequels
Reflecting on Álvarez’s musings about venturing into unexplored realms in an upcoming Alien: Romulus, it’s hard not to recall Sir Ridley Scott’s endeavors to delve into fresh ideas in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Although the latter film would emphasize its horror roots reminiscent of earlier Alien installments, it was actually Prometheus, a movie not even named Alien, that dared to probe intriguing new ideas within the universe Scott co-created.
In a short scene, Romulus may casually reference the happenings of the Prometheus story by featuring the mysterious black material from the movie. This could hint at the possibility that future installments might delve deeper into the concepts initially presented in that film.
It’s refreshing to know that Álvarez isn’t planning a sequel solely based on the financial triumph of Romulus. Instead, he’s motivated by his conviction and enthusiasm for the narrative. As he shared with Empire, “The common error with sequels is producing them because it’s possible, and due to the success of Romulus, we certainly have the opportunity to make a sequel. However, I wouldn’t proceed unless we have a truly compelling concept, something that deserves the title.
Regardless of the path Álvarez chooses for the sequel, the Alien franchise is poised for a brilliant future. Alongside the upcoming movie, enthusiasts can anticipate the FX series titled Alien: Earth, created by Noah Hawley (of Fargo fame), premiering this summer. Furthermore, with books, games, and other projects yet to be revealed, the Alien universe has vast potential for expansion into unexplored realms.
