Alien: Romulus Director Fede lvarez Talks Possible Sequel

As a seasoned movie critic with decades spent navigating the labyrinth of cinematic universes and sequels, I must say that the prospect of a follow-up to Fede Álvarez’s masterful work, Alien: Romulus, has me as giddy as a schoolboy on a sugar rush. This man is not one to shy away from pushing boundaries, as evidenced by his fearless reimagining of the Evil Dead franchise and now, this bold leap into the terrifying expanse of the Alien universe.

The following article contains minor spoilers for Alien: Romulus.

After the hit movie Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez who’s also known for Don’t Breathe, fans are eagerly wondering if there will be another sequel from him. Exciting news for these enthusiasts is that Álvarez himself has hinted at a potential return. In fact, if given the chance, he could easily come up with an idea for a sequel on the spot.

As a die-hard sci-fi fan, I can’t contain my excitement about my latest masterpiece, “Alien: Romulus,” that has been creating waves at the box office. This film, nestled neatly between the first two installments of the franchise, is already being celebrated as one of the finest Alien sequels ever made! With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 81%, it’s just shy of classics like the original Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), and it’s almost on par with Ridley Scott’s recent works. It’s an honor to be part of such a phenomenal journey!

Since Romulus has just recently premiered, discussions about a sequel are purely hypothetical at this point. Nevertheless, Álvarez addresses an essential query regarding the prospect of proposing a sequel given the movie’s popularity.

Absolutely! We instinctively delve into creating sequels without much planning. For us, movies have always been centered around stories, not just potential franchises or sequels. In my recent professional life of the last ten years, I’ve learned this language. To me, it’s all about the tale that needs to be told. Once we completed the first story, our minds naturally wandered to what might happen next in Yvaga. We speculated if it was a wonderful or dreadful place. Given our perspective, we imagined it as a terrible place they fantasize about, which sparked ideas for where the story could go and what might transpire. Within a few minutes, we realized that this sounds like a setup for a sequel.

In “Alien: Romulus,” Álvarez refers to the destination planet that the struggling miners aim to flee towards. The story revolves around Rain Carradine, a worker from this colony who is persuaded to orchestrate an escape from their harsh living conditions on Yvaga. Other colonists hint at reaching Yvaga by accessing abandoned cryostasis pods on a spacecraft orbiting their planet, and they require the assistance of her android sibling. Rain agrees, and once aboard the ship, they soon discover that it’s deserted for a good reason: it houses a xenomorph colony. However, their predicament doesn’t end there, as the monsters appear to align with a specific android’s objectives.

Álvarez continues to shed some light on the possibility of a sequel in his chat with THR:

“We prefer to approach it as if each project is a new chapter in a story, and consider whether our audience is eager for more. We’ll gauge their interest and see if they request it. I believe that a sequel shouldn’t be made too soon; it’s crucial to let the audience miss it and want more. For instance, there were seven years between ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens’. Of course, we have thoughts on where the story should progress.”

The movie, which dethroned Deadpool and Wolverine at the box office as a blockbuster hit, has stirred up intense discussions everywhere. Some critics argue that the film is disrespectful for bringing back an iconic character using questionable techniques (in essence, it’s a different character).

Álvarez is known for his innovative approach to horror directing, often disregarding established norms in his projects. In the 2013 movie Evil Dead, he opted for a more chilling atmosphere over comedy, making it an intensely terrifying experience. For Alien: Romulus, Álvarez subtly paid tribute to earlier installments in a way that might be overlooked by casual viewers; this unique interpretation of the franchise pushes against the boundaries set by Ridley Scott and results in an outstanding space horror film.
