With the might of Grayskull, Amazon’s upcoming remake of Masters of the Universe is brimming with power! The studio and streaming platform have unveiled their modern interpretation of the iconic ’80s He-Man cartoon at CinemaCon, offering a glimpse into the production process. Insights from behind the scenes indicate that this reboot will maintain as much fidelity as possible to the cherished cartoon and action figures. They plan to achieve this by skillfully blending practical effects with computer-generated imagery (CGI), thereby breathtakingly recreating the enchanting world in live-action.
The short clip showcased moments such as glimpses of He-Man’s sword and the famous phrase “By the power of Grayskull!”, a mix of real-life and digital effects, as well as authentic sets and costumes reminiscent of the original animated series. For more details about the footage, you can refer to ScreenRant’s description provided below.
A brief clip from BTS features a glimpse of He-Man’s sword, while the director reminisces about his childhood toys. In the backdrop, you can hear “By the power of Grayskull!” echoing. This production showcases an abundance of practical effects (blended with VFX), faithful costumes based on the cartoon, and expansive physical sets. The scene concludes with He-Man’s hair billowing in the wind.
Last May, it was disclosed that Nicholas Galitzine, who played key roles in Red, White & Royal Blue and Bottoms, would star as the ’80s icon for Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel’s Masters of the Universe reboot. This highly anticipated movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 5, 2026. Travis Knight, director of ParaNorman and Bumblebee, will be at the helm for Masters of the Universe. After being abruptly canceled at Netflix, Amazon MGM Studios took over the project. The script has since been revised by Chris Butler, a long-time collaborator of Knight’s (ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings), based on an initial draft written by David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee.
In this new version, we’ve gathered a stellar ensemble for our reboot, featuring Galitzine portraying Prince Adam (a.k.a He-Man). The cast also includes Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto playing Skeletor, Alison Brie depicting Evil-Lyn, Sam C. Wilson taking on Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson stepping into the role of Goat Man, James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena Glenn, and MCU star Idris Elba embodying Man-At-Arms. Furthermore, Dolph Lundgren, known for his roles in the 1987 Masters of the Universe film adaptation, has hinted at a potential guest appearance.
‘Masters of the Universe’ Promises To Be All Kinds of “Fun”
Multiple actors have hinted at the “joyous” vibe that will characterize the upcoming adaptation of Masters of the Universe. In a recent conversation, Johannes Haukur Jóhannesson, playing Malcolm (also known as Fisto) in the reboot, hinted at the “exciting script” that will drive this new version of He-Man. “We have a truly entertaining script that the entire cast adores,” he stated. “We’re eager to start filming and bring it to life. It’s going to be fantastic!” Additionally, co-star Camila Mendes has hinted at Nicholas Galitzine’s “humorous” portrayal of He-Man, saying:
It seems to me that revealing this information might expose a major plot twist, yet I suspect his wit is the key. He’s incredibly humorous, exceptionally gifted, and hilarious.
Originally slated for release on Netflix by directors Adam and Aaron Nee, featuring Kyle Allen from West Side Story as He-Man, the Masters of the Universe project was abandoned in July 2023. Back then, it was speculated that the streaming service had invested around $30-$60 million into its production, with rising costs being the primary factor leading to the cancellation of this live-action Masters of the Universe adaptation. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Amazon’s attempts are just as fruitful as they could potentially be.
