As a gaming enthusiast who grew up with Lara Croft as my idol, I must say I am beyond thrilled about Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series. After the disappointing attempts to revitalize the franchise on the big screen, it’s refreshing to see Sophie Turner stepping into the iconic boots of our beloved heroine.
The much-anticipated Tomb Raider series on Amazon Prime Video has secured its Lara Croft. Previous reports suggested that two well-known actresses were under consideration for the legendary role, but it appears the Game of Thrones actress has landed the coveted part. Following unsuccessful efforts to rejuvenate the franchise in movies, Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge plans to transform the video game with Sophie Turner playing the lead character.
According to Deadline, Sophie Turner has secured the role of Lara Croft for Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series following auditions. She outshone Lucy Boynton from Bohemian Rhapsody in the competition to take on this upcoming role. Previously portrayed by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, Turner now stands among an impressive lineup of accomplished actresses who have played Lara Croft in live-action versions. Few details are available about the project at present, but those involved seem eager to honor the legendary game series with their work.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who previously expressed her enthusiasm for the franchise, has taken on a new project within it since Amazon initially gave the show the green light as part of her multi-project deal with the studio. Following the success of Fleabag, Waller-Bridge is now focusing on a pre-existing series that carries its own set of challenges.
Reflecting on it now, I believe my teenage self would be astonished to learn about this turn of events. Being involved in bringing Tomb Raider to television is a significant part of my life, and I’m deeply grateful for the dedicated colleagues I get to work with. Lara Croft holds a special place in my heart, as she does for countless others, and I eagerly anticipate embarking on this journey, along with bats and all!
‘Tomb Raider’ Joins Amazon’s Growing Video Game Adaptations
Amazon has ventured into video game adaptations, achieving notable successes. Recently, Prime Video premiered “Fallout” to great praise and is now working on its second season. They are also developing a “God of War” series, following a creative overhaul, as well as an eagerly anticipated “Mass Effect” adaptation, rumored to be their sci-fi equivalent of “Game of Thrones”. The progress of the “Tomb Raider” series is uncertain at this point, but having Sophie Turner cast in the lead role certainly adds excitement. Potential production could start as soon as next year for a possible 2026 release, though that’s purely speculative.
Instead of Prime Video launching their own “Tomb Raider” adaptation, Netflix has already introduced an animated series featuring Hayley Atwell. Previous live-action adaptations didn’t fare well with critics, but the Netflix show “Tomb Raider: Legend of Lara Croft” received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 67%, the highest within the franchise. Although reviews have been somewhat mixed, it remains to be seen if Amazon’s version will garner the most positive responses. The popular video game franchise was rebooted in 2013 with great results, but its live-action adaptations are still finding their footing.
