‘Anatomy of Lies’ Directors Unpack How Former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Writer Elisabeth Finch’s Lies Affected Her Family, Tease “Tons More” to Story

I must say, it’s truly heartening to witness Jenn’s transformation from a fragile soul to a strong, resilient woman. It’s not just the film that brought about this change, but her courage and determination to reclaim her narrative and heal herself. Her journey has been incredibly cathartic, not just for her, but also for those who have gone through similar experiences.

Evgenia Peretz, a writer for Vanity Fair, usually prefers to work diligently when crafting her stories. However, when she encountered Jennifer Beyer in March of 2022, who was the wife of ex-Grey’s Anatomy writer Elisabeth Finch (later exposed for fabricating aspects of her life), Peretz felt an urgent need to expedite her reporting due to the substantial and intriguing information at hand.

She explains to The Hollywood Reporter that, given the heated nature of the story, she felt an urgent need to share it promptly. There was extensive information to disseminate.

Two months later, her tale made it to a two-part article for Vanity Fair, revealing that Finch had deceived one of television’s longest-running writers rooms – Grey’s Anatomy on ABC. However, the acts of deceit by the writer and executive producer extended beyond the sanctum of Grey’s Anatomy; they impacted Beyer and her family in a deep and significant manner.

Later on, Peretz joined forces with her spouse, David Schisgall, to jointly direct “Anatomy of Lies“, the three-part Peacock documentary currently streaming. This production unravels the tales concocted by Finch, demonstrating how her Hollywood realm intersected with Beyer’s, whom Finch married in 2020.

Simultaneously, Peretz was conversing with Beyer for her account, it became public knowledge that Grey’s Anatomy producer Shondaland and Disney were investigating Finch following claims that the prominent writer had fabricated aspects of her personal life. Finch, who asserted she had experienced rare bone cancer, lost a kidney, underwent an abortion, and suffered from PTSD due to her ties to the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, incorporated these traumatic experiences into poignant Grey’s Anatomy episodes featuring beloved characters. (She also discussed some of these alleged hardships in publications such as Elle, Shondaland, and The Hollywood Reporter, which withdrew her story in 2022.)

It came to light that Finch was fabricating parts of her real-life stories, as exposed by Beyer in interviews for Anatomy of Lies. This revelation was communicated to Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator, via an email from Beyer herself. This disclosure significantly altered Finch’s legacy. By the end of that month, Finch stepped away from Grey’s Anatomy and departed the series after eight seasons as a writer. Towards the end of the year, she confessed to never having had cancer at all.

The documentary titled Anatomy of Lies includes conversations with Beyer and two of her five kids, as well as previous writers from the show Grey’s Anatomy, Kiley Donovan and Andy Reaser. Last week, on the day the doc was released, Finch published a regretful statement on her Instagram (which is now private), stating, “I got trapped in the web of lies, betraying and causing trauma to my closest friends, family, and colleagues.” Following this, Beyer posted a lengthy response on her Facebook page, which THR viewed. In part, she wrote, “The pain she intended to inflict was effectively achieved in a covert manner.” She referred to the public apology as a “clear demonstration of her manipulative strategies, filled with deeper implications.” … I would like to emphasize that she has shown no genuine remorse for her actions towards either me or my children.

In their conversation with Peretz and Schisgall, THR discussed building trust with Beyer and resolving lingering queries about Finch’s influence on Hollywood writers’ rooms. They also revealed a recent development concerning the ending title cards: Beyer and Finch, who were previously estranged, have now finalized their divorce. This signifies that Jenn is taking back control of her story and regaining faith in herself.

What has the response been since you released Anatomy of Lies?

PERETZ It seems to be getting a ton of attention, and it’s really gratifying to see the response.

SCHISGALL The nice thing is that the contributors have been calling.

ALICE It seems to me they find comfort in sharing their tale. Speaking out in such a setting can offer great healing. Many of them carried intense emotions from their past experiences.

Evgenia, May of 2022 was when your Vanity Fair article came out. When did you enter this story?

In March of 2022, I encountered Jenn and began chronicling her tale. Typically, I am meticulous about my reporting, but this story demanded my constant attention for a solid two months without pause.

What then made you want to adapt this for the screen and work together to direct this?

Indeed, I find the narrative truly captivating. The creators behind Grey’s Anatomy, clearly possess exceptional storytelling skills. And Jenn Beyer, undeniably, demonstrated remarkable intelligence, resilience, and emotional vulnerability. It was fascinating to consider that this individual was shaping other people’s tales, personalizing them, and then broadcasting them on television. This visual concept was a compelling hook that kept me engaged.

Could you tell me what was your intention behind writing “Anatomy of Lies” and at what point did you decide to divide the story into three parts?

Initially, we began with four segments. There’s often a desire for more time, but it’s likely unnecessary. The third segment fell neatly into a well-structured act. We filmed the interviews roughly 40 times for each minute shown. We invested significant time with individuals, sometimes for multiple days. We captured numerous interviews during this process.

PERETZ Many, many hours with Jenn Beyer. I think that was probably four or five days straight.

During Beyer’s interviews, it was evident that she found it challenging to revisit the past. How did you manage to win her trust and provide her with the necessary support during these interviews?

PERETZ Building trust took a considerable amount of time, well before any footage was filmed. We needed to establish a deep understanding of our subject, which occurred significantly during the article-writing phase. This process continued throughout the several months spent conceptualizing, selling, and planning the docuseries. By the time we met with her, we had grown intimately familiar with her story. However, it was uncertain how she would narrate that story under a camera’s gaze and amidst a crew. There were sensitive topics that could trigger her, for which we took necessary breaks whenever required. Despite these challenges, she remained committed to telling her story effectively. She invested considerable time and energy to ensure our interview was as powerful as possible.

In our efforts to ensure she could handle revisiting these distressing experiences, we meticulously planned the interviews, allocating ample time for each session. Many factors were considered during this process; however, some aspects of our approach were personal and private to her recovery. We followed numerous safety protocols and guidelines in order to make the interview experience safe for her. A significant portion of these measures stemmed from our past experiences, but much was also guided by Jenn herself, as her own recovery and well-being played a crucial role in shaping how we conducted the interview. It was an enlightening journey for us all.

How did your discussions with Maya and Van unfold regarding their reasons for wanting to get involved?

PERETZ (PARAPHRASED) We were pleasantly surprised by the outcome; we hadn’t anticipated having Maya and Van participate. One day, Maya expressed her desire to share her thoughts with us. While we had interacted casually with Maya before, we were captivated during our formal interview by her exceptional storytelling abilities, her emotional intelligence, and her genuine presence on camera. We discovered that Van also wished to contribute, revealing himself as a warm, touching individual. Their participation was invaluable because it provided insights into Jenn as a mother, which is crucial for her and significantly ties into the overall themes of the series.

SCHISGALL The children’s discussions didn’t originate from us; they evolved within the family’s unique way of coping with the distressing event they all experienced together. During our interviews, Jenn was always seated alongside Maya and Van, and we used three cameras to create an illusion of a single interviewee. This setup, among other precautions, was designed to ensure maximum safety, as Jenn was present throughout.

The documentary showcases two intertwined aspects of this story: the public influence Finch exerted in Hollywood and the private effect she made on Beyer’s family. When did you realize that some of the previous Grey’s Anatomy writers were involved, and did their presence affect the structure of the presentation?

It became apparent from the start that we had a few key characters. Later, Kiley Donovan expressed interest in joining the story. We didn’t know her background at first, but were captivated when we spoke with her. This unexpected element enriched Finch’s character in a way not depicted in the Vanity Fair article. Thus, with these three writers from Grey’s Anatomy, we established a solid foundation for understanding Finch’s persona both within the writers room and in Hollywood. Additionally, there was the Jenn aspect. We brainstormed various ways to intertwine these elements throughout the story. There were many attempts and failures, but we eventually found a smooth method to do so.

In your conversations with Donovan, she shared her story which later became a significant aspect of the episode “Silent All These Years” about rape survivors. It’s said that Finch wrote this storyline without Donovan’s approval. So, how did all these pieces fit together in your understanding?

PERETZ (PARAPHRASED) Indeed, it was captivating. Upon hearing her story, I couldn’t help but notice similarities with Jo, the character portrayed by Camilla Luddington in Grey’s. Since Finch had a peculiar connection to Jo, this additional layer made the plot even more intriguing. The tale was deeply emotional and poignant. It was astonishing to consider that such an intimate aspect of someone’s identity might have inspired Finch for a major, high-profile episode. This revelation was quite shocking, touching upon the most personal aspects of someone’s identity.

She spontaneously shared it with us at that instant, making it feel incredibly personal and touching. We aspire to convey that same emotional resonance through the screen as well.

The article mentions that Luddington didn’t reply to your inquiry. Did you contact any other members of the Grey’s Anatomy team? (Note: The Hollywood Reporter contacted ABC and Shondaland for a response.)

PERETZ (PARAPHRASED) It would have been great if Shonda Rhimes and Debbie Allen had joined us, but unfortunately, it seems they chose not to take part in our project.

If you had their participation, what were some questions you would have asked them?

PARAPHRASING: Essentially, our queries to the writers were almost like hitting the mark. In this narrative, one fortunate or positive aspect is that Shondaland’s response doesn’t warrant a separate tale because it was exceptionally good. There isn’t much more to add beyond acknowledging they acted as a responsible company should. Therefore, aside from queries such as “What was your relationship with her?” and “How did you find out?” – the questions we asked everyone else – I don’t believe there would be additional topics for discussion with them.

What was your correspondence like with Finch and, were you hoping she would participate?

PERETZ We really wanted her involvement, and we made several attempts to contact her. We directly asked, “If you’re not comfortable participating, would someone else be willing to speak on your behalf?” We truly wished for this. It would have been advantageous if she had agreed, as with the article I wrote for Vanity Fair. That could have made a difference. Fortunately, she has granted numerous interviews in the past, so we were able to use some of that existing material along with the interview she gave to The Ankler, where she discusses the events surrounding her. Consequently, we were able to include that in our work.

What questions do you still have lingering for Finch?

SCHISGALL So many.

PERETZ It’s a mystery, really. I wonder if she pondered on the individuals who were caring for her during what seemed like her final moments, those who believed she was dying, and the ones who made sacrifices on her behalf. Did any remorse seep into her heart? Was she capable of empathizing with them? Yet, there are countless questions to explore…

SCHISGALL I think the questions we would have would be the questions that everyone would have. What would be appealing about it would just be to create an interview space where you let her be under the lights and talk for a long time. More than any question, having that experience and doing that kind of interview, I think, would be illuminative of her. And it might be illuminative for her. That’s how we would approach it, “What do you have to say for yourself?”

She released an apology statement when the doc came out. What is your reaction to what she said?

We truly wish that she keeps receiving the necessary assistance for whatever issues she’s dealing with.

In a 2022 interview with The Ankler, a writer discussed a possible undiagnosed medical condition proposed by a doctor. He emphasized that the intriguing aspect of this tale is its connection to Hollywood, and he mentioned other writers in the industry who have exaggerated facts for their career advancement. What makes this story so captivating?

PERETZ (PARAPHRASED) I believe she surpassed the additional details that Peter Kiefer mentioned in The Ankler. When creating this series, we made a deliberate effort to avoid diagnosing her because we’re not medical professionals and have never interacted with her personally. It’s a significant responsibility to diagnose someone, so we purposely aimed to steer clear of excessive analysis of her psychology. Instead, our focus was on examining the influence such a person has on others and what they might lose in the process.

I believe the reason this is gaining so much attention could be due to the public’s fascination with cons. It’s captivating to see someone infiltrate a writers room, and the concept of personal experience is highly valued in Hollywood. When people search for stories, they are intrigued when told, “This actually happened to you!” This adds an authentic touch that usually enhances storytelling. However, it seems there was a strong demand for trauma-based stories, which she managed to provide. Hence, the narrative also carries a hint of a Hollywood flair in this regard.

SCISGALL We’ve also dabbled in writing fiction. The narratives we create, whether they’re the tales we listen to, the ones we share about ourselves, or the ones we bring to life through various mediums, often fall into clear-cut categories. However, as creators of these stories, we find ourselves constantly traversing these boundaries. Venturing into realms where such lines dissolve is intriguing, and something that many writers and storytellers may view as forbidden. As fellow narrators, the merging of these boundaries sparks our curiosity.

Do you think Finch’s behavior will have an impact on writers rooms moving forward?

SCHISGALL Since we couldn’t talk to the former members of the Grey’s writing team, we can’t say for sure how their departure affected the room.

JANE It’s reasonable to assume that a writers’ room may exhibit a touch of caution when someone new arrives, claiming extraordinary stories from their past. Such instances have occurred in the world of Hollywood writing, where individuals might fabricate or exaggerate events to boost their credibility. I believe this could certainly lead others to be more cautious or skeptical about such assertions.

SCHISGALL During our journey, we kept hearing more and more tales about authors who had exaggerated their personal narratives, which I believe is another factor fueling curiosity. In essence, this is an extraordinary illustration of a phenomenon that occurs quite often.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but wonder what it means when Finch mentions in her recent 2022 interview about potentially returning to writing for Hollywood, hinting at The Handmaid’s Tale. It definitely piques my curiosity!

In our series, it appears that her statement sparked various responses, perhaps not what she intended. The piece seemed less like an apology and more like an explanation, implying “I should be reinstated in Hollywood because of all I’ve endured.” I believe this interview struck a nerve with many people.>

In other words, The details of their conversation are not fully known, but it appears that she provided an explanation about her work rather than expressing regret, which was the main topic discussed between them.

Has the divorce between Beyer and Finch been finalized recently? I’m curious about how Beyer is faring at the moment.

PARAPHRASING Peretz mentioned that they are now divorced, this occurred a few weeks back. Jenn appears to have grown significantly stronger since revealing her story. He believes she’s rediscovering her personal narrative and self-confidence. Sharing her story was also meant to help her children understand her struggles. In his opinion, it has been an extremely therapeutic process. However, he acknowledges that there’s still pain she’s dealing with, but overall, she’s in a much stronger position, which is truly heartening to observe.

“There were numerous factors that led Jenn to her current state, not just the movie. However, witnessing her transformation from a person who was initially quite vulnerable to someone now full of strength has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my professional journey.

Did Beyer share about the encouraging words she got from the Grey’s team, describing her as someone who speaks the truth? Are you satisfied with the goals you aimed to achieve?

PERETZ Entirely, it’s been incredibly rewarding to witness her healing during this journey, just as David mentioned. Our aim isn’t merely for her recovery, but also to resonate with a broad spectrum of individuals who have faced similar circumstances – betrayal, deception, or the jarring realization that the person they cherished may not be who they thought. This unexpected feeling of being manipulated, often referred to as gaslighting, is quite prevalent, and we want those who have gone through such experiences to understand they are not alone. We hope they realize it’s not a sign of gullibility but rather a shared human experience.

Individuals susceptible to being exploited in such a manner tend to be highly compassionate ones. It seems that those with larger hearts are more likely to encounter situations like these.

Is there more to this story?

SCHISGALL There’s tons and tons and tons more to this story.

PERETZ Not necessarily that we’re going to tell, but that exists.

SCHISGALL (Paraphrased) We had to leave out a significant amount of content from the show due to time constraints, structure, or lack of proper sourcing. There are many events that took place during this period that didn’t make it into the series, and we only scratched the surface in certain aspects of her life. Prior to Grey’s, there were phases we didn’t explore thoroughly. However, there is a vast amount of untold stories.

After directing on this together, what’s next?

SHARING INSIGHTS Throughout my work on documents focusing on individuals who have recently experienced trauma, I’ve come to understand the necessity for more structured approaches in our line of work. It seems we are naturally drawn to traumatic situations. There appears to be a wealth of knowledge to be gained here. The field is evolving in this direction and it’s an area that currently captivates me. How can we establish safe and therapeutic environments, complete with protocols and practices, to delve into people’s traumas effectively? This is crucial not just for the mental wellbeing of those involved, but also for the filmmakers themselves, as there are many aspects of responsibility and emotional impact to consider. Simultaneously, we aim to produce more films, documentaries, and screenplays.

PERETZ And write more articles.
