Anderson .Paak’s New Speakeasy, Andy’s, Is “Like My Home Studio … But With Bomb-A** Food”

As a long-time fan of Anderson .Paak and his soulful, genre-defying music, I can hardly contain my excitement about the opening of Andy’s, his new live-music venue in West Hollywood. Having grown up in L.A., I’ve always been drawn to the city’s vibrant nightlife scene, and the Houstons have consistently delivered some of the best spots around. The fact that .Paak is partnering with these industry veterans, whose ventures include La Descarga, Break Room 86, No Vacancy, and Level 8, just seals the deal for me.

Grammy-winning artist Anderson .Paak, along with Bruno Mars in the duo Silk Sonic, will be performing at Andy’s on September 25. This is a cozy, vintage live music venue that emphasizes R&B and jazz. His business partners for this venture are his friends, Mark and Jonnie Houston – well-known figures in L.A.’s nightlife scene who also own popular spots like La Descarga, Break Room 86, No Vacancy, and Level 8.

.Paak describes the atmosphere of the West Hollywood club located at 9077 Santa Monica Blvd., situated between the Troubadour and Dan Tana’s, as being similar to being in his home studio or mom’s basement. However, he emphasizes that it will offer excellent food and a high-quality sound system for performances.” (Additionally, .Paak recently made his directorial debut with the film K-Pops, which was presented at TIFF this month.)

The location was previously called The Doheny Room and prior to that, it was known as The Lounge. In 2002, this venue became immortalized in pop culture lore due to a well-publicized dance-off involving former couple Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, along with their respective entourages.

Recently, Paak has been conducting auditions for a versatile weekly house band that can deliver outstanding performances throughout the week. He’s adorned the place with memorabilia, including awards, personal pictures, and even the vibrant outfit he donned during his 2022 Super Bowl halftime show.

Mark mentioned that our idea originated from a chat among us,” he said. “It was more like brainstorming. The most enjoyable moments for us have been during impromptu jam sessions. What if we could recreate that vibe at a public place? That’s the direction we’re aiming towards.

Similar to numerous Houston establishments, Andy’s is discreetly located, reminiscent of a speakeasy. The entrance is cleverly concealed behind a newly set up, fully operational newsstand filled with periodicals – a distinctly mysterious facade. “There aren’t many places like this left in town,” Jonnie remarks, emphasizing the project’s nostalgic charm. “We plan to offer cigarettes, gum, and an exceptional selection of publications – exactly what you would find within these racks.
