As a passionate advocate for diversity and representation in Hollywood, I can hardly contain my excitement about this year’s Raising Our Voices luncheon! With Annette Bening, Kumail Nanjiani, Michaela Jae Rodriguez, and many other trailblazers gracing the event, it promises to be a day filled with enlightening conversations and powerful stories.
Annette Bening, Kumail Nanjiani, and Michaela Jae Rodriguez are some of the prominent figures set to star at The Hollywood Reporter’s third annual Raising Our Voices gathering on September 11th. This occasion aims to shine a light on and honor influential voices within the industry that advocate for diversity, equality, inclusion, and accessibility.
At the upcoming event, our lead sponsor, STARZ, will highlight one of their Transparency Talks through the #TakeTheLead campaign, focusing on promoting gender equality and increasing female presence in the entertainment industry. By standing behind their #TakeTheLead pledge, STARZ boosts narratives about, created by, and for women and underrepresented groups using genuine storytelling and representation both on-screen and off.
The discussion will be facilitated by Stacey Wilson Hunt, a contributing editor at THR, as she leads an engaging talk with prominent women in Hollywood. This includes Nina Yang Bongiovi, a producer known for her work on “Fruitvale Station,” “Passing,” and “Fancy Dance.” Also participating is Carla Gutierrez, a documentary filmmaker recognized for her work on “Frida.” Additionally, Kirsten Schaffer, the executive director of Women in Film, will join the conversation. Further participants will be announced later.
The organization known as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), one of our collaborators, will host another discussion titled “Freedom to Exist: Shaping Tomorrow’s Transgender Visibility.”
Led by Oscar-nominated actor and LGBTQ+ advocate Bening, the discussion will feature prominent transgender performers like Emmy-nominated Rodriguez (from “Loot”), Emmy-nominated Nava Mau (“Baby Reindeer”), and Brian Michael Smith (“9-1-1: Lonestar”). Also participating will be Chase Strangio, a leading attorney for LGBTQ+ legal matters at the ACLU.
At the exclusive gathering, there will also be a featured speech from the renowned comedian, Oscar-nominated scriptwriter, and Emmy-nominated actor, Nanjiani.
Co-sponsored by East West Bank, Raising Our Voices will take place at Spago in Beverly Hills.
