As a long-time Marvel and Star Wars enthusiast, I must say that witnessing Harrison Ford join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World has been nothing short of thrilling! The man is a living legend, having brought iconic characters like Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and Rick Deckard to life. I can only imagine the challenges Marvel Studios faced when trying to convince such an esteemed actor to join their superhero fold.
As a gamer, I wouldn’t have thought it would be a breeze to get Harrison Ford, a true legend known for iconic roles like Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and Rick Deckard, to play Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World. The folks at Marvel Studios had quite the challenge on their hands. But, in an amusing twist, Anthony Mackie hinted that their shared history in Hollywood Homicide might have been the spark that drew Ford into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s superhero universe.
As a devoted fan, I was thrilled to hear that the cast of Captain America 4 graced this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. They tantalized us with tidbits about the upcoming superhero flick, further piquing our interest in what we already knew about Brave New World. Anthony Mackie shared exclusive insights with Entertainment Tonight regarding Harrison Ford joining the MCU fold. Mackie humorously attributed their collaboration to their past intellectual exchanges and the strong bond they share. In his words: “It’s all thanks to our previous brainstorming sessions, you know, our deep connection.”
In the year 2004, I collaborated with Harrison Ford in a movie. When I reached out to him, I said something along the lines of “Hey, it’s possible you don’t recall me, but I played small roles in your film and I gave my best.” I then asked, “Can you lend me a hand? Could you meet up with me?” He responded by saying he needed some time to get back to me. Two days later, he replied, “I will help out.”
In the past, Sam Wilson, known for acting, had a minor role in the action comedy “Hollywood Homicide” released in 2003. This minor part is unlikely to have influenced the choice of the “Fugitive” star, Chris Evans, to portray Thaddeus Ross in the upcoming Marvel movie. However, it’s amusing that the actor from “Twisted Metal” would use such a term for Evans, whom I doubt he’d ever addressed as “big dawg” before. Nevertheless, it makes me curious if they recognized each other during their reunion for “Brave New World,” given their shared film history.
Although Anthony Mackie has worked with Harrison Ford somewhat previously, he confessed to feeling intimidated by him during the filming of Captain America 4. Ford’s impressive legacy and his subtly humorous demeanor can be quite overpowering at times. Despite the Marvel Cinematic Universe actors growing familiar with each other, Mackie even shared a photo of them on Instagram, suggesting a close bond. However, considering Mackie felt comfortable poking fun at their friendship, it seems they’re more than just colleagues. It takes a lot to act alongside a legend, especially when there’s an element of pretense involved.
More on Captain America: Brave New World
During a light-hearted moment on the set of “Captain America: Brave New World,” Harrison Ford made an exceptionally candid statement that aligns perfectly with his distinctive personality.
Regarding the story behind the 82-year-old icon joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Harrison Ford himself confessed his enthusiasm about being part of it. During Marvel’s SDCC panel, he shared that he was intrigued by the excitement other actors had playing in the Marvel world after watching them enjoy the experience. Given the significant role his character, President Ross, appears to have in the “Captain America: Brave New World” trailer, it seems likely he’ll stick around this fictional universe. Interestingly, Ford not only takes over the role of President Ross, a part originally played by William Hurt, but also portrays Red Hulk, a character who might reappear in future Avengers films. I’m looking forward to witnessing his journey within the MCU, although it seems unnecessary for Anthony Mackie to try to persuade him to stay with the franchise again (just joking).
In “Captain America: Brave New World,” scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day, 2025, you’ll find both of the earlier mentioned actors. This film is generating a lot of buzz as one of the most eagerly awaited movies slated for 2025. If you’re interested in seeing these actors together before then, their previous collaboration, “Hollywood Homicide,” is available for streaming now, with a Max subscription.
