Anthony Mackie on Embracing His New Role in ‘Captain America’: “Doing As Much As We Could With These Wings”

Four years following the debut of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, where Anthony Mackie‘s character, Sam Wilson, grappled with his new role bestowed upon him by Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, the actor now shares that Marvel’s latest production presents Sam Wilson as a fully-fledged Captain America.

Mackie shared with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of Captain America: Brave New World on Tuesday, “He’s taken on the responsibilities that come with the shield, and now you’ll get to witness his interpretation of Captain America.” He explained that discussions with director Julius Onah focused on maximizing the wings, pushing their limits, and making the action sequences thrilling for viewers. Mackie believes that audiences will be taken aback by the dynamic action sequences and the portrayal of humanity and dignity in this character.

In the story, Brave New World, Wilson finds himself in the midst of a global crisis following his encounter with President Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford. Previously, the role of Ross was played by the late William Hurt within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Ford mentioned, “I was able to build upon the character that he had established. I won’t give too much away, but let’s just say I transform into the Red Hulk. After this revelation, I wonder, ‘Where do I go from here?’ – I honestly have no idea.

In Onah’s opinion, “The aspect I admire most about Ford’s character evolution is that it centers around him striving to reshape himself. He no longer desires to be the aggressive man of his past; rather, he aims to become a compassionate individual, one who seeks unity in the world and above all, one who longs to reconcile with his daughter Betty.

As a captivated spectator, I must say that the intricate blend of elements in this movie significantly shapes the character’s journey, particularly the dynamic between him and Anthony Mackie. In this extraordinary narrative, they embody symbols of unparalleled prestige – Captain America and the President of the United States, respectively. This conflict results in a gripping drama that is further enriched by thrilling action scenes.

In relation to Mackie’s portrayal of the legendary hero, Onah underscores that this Captain America is characterized by his empathy, and the film explores this unique ability through a remarkable journey shared between Captain America and Harrison Ford’s character.

As more Avengers movies approach, could Captain America potentially take on a leadership role within the team? “I’m not sure,” Mackie humorously responded. “My boss never shares information with me. He merely instructs me not to be late for work.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on Friday.
