As a long-time fan of Dancing with the Stars, I’ve watched countless seasons and dances that have left me in awe or cringing, sometimes both at the same time! The latest revelation about the cha-cha-cha being the dance most likely to lead to elimination has piqued my curiosity even more.
As Season 33 of “Dancing with the Stars” approaches its finale within the 2024 TV lineup, the race for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy is heating up. To put it mildly, the competition has reached a critical point. When it comes to eliminations, it’s not always easy to identify the factors that lead to a contestant’s departure. However, recent findings suggest that there might be a specific dance style that leads to more eliminations than others. In other words, this dance seems to result in a higher number of contestants being eliminated more frequently.
Researchers from VegasInsider.com (as reported by TV Insider) analyzed a total of 3,300 dances spanning all 33 seasons of ‘Dancing with the Stars’. By removing group dances and routines performed during non-elimination weeks, they were left with 2,600 dances to study. Their goal was to gather data that would help identify which dance has resulted in the most eliminations. Among the 15 types of dances, it appears that the cha-cha-cha has led to eliminations for 38 couples, with the tango coming close at 33 pairs. Interestingly, the mambo has been responsible for the elimination of eight couples.
It’s intriguing to ponder why the cha-cha-cha ranks first in this specific measurement. Yet, let me clarify that these rankings don’t automatically imply that dancing the cha-cha-cha will lead to immediate elimination. Fans of the show understand that choreography and execution play crucial roles in how a performance is received.
Currently, no pair who danced the cha-cha in Season 33 has been eliminated yet. However, as the season progresses, there’s a possibility that eliminations might occur, leaving only the most proficient pairs to continue.

Despite the variety of dances, many celebrity competitors this season have been excelling. Olympic rugby player Ilona Maher received high praise for her performance of “Encanto” during Disney Night. At that point, she and Alan Bersten delivered a jazz routine to “Surface Pressure,” and Bersten’s donkey look was quite terrifying. On the other hand, Danny Amendola, an unanticipated contestant on DWTS, and his partner Witney Carson have become a strong contender after their contemporary dance to “Unsteady” by X Ambassadors. This performance became so well-liked that it even gained popularity on TikTok.
In my gaming world, the jive and quickstep seem to be the top choices when it comes to staying safe with a whopping 197 pairs making it through each round. On the flip side, the mambo is once more finding itself at the bottom of the pack with only 38 pairs managing to survive. The cha-cha-cha, however, has a knack for getting couples eliminated; it’s not just the most likely dance to send us home, but also one of the riskiest moves on the floor with a total of 170 negative points under its belt. That puts it in second place when it comes to dances that lead to eliminations and finding ourselves in the bottom two for results, with the tango leading the way at 178 points.
Equipped with insights about dances potentially causing a couple’s elimination, I can’t wait to see more of DWTS. Keep in mind that these numbers aren’t definitive, but I must admit that I will be closely observing all future cha-cha-chas.
To keep up with the ongoing trend, viewers should make sure to watch “Dancing with the Stars” every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, and also have an active Disney+ subscription for a full viewing experience.
