Are The Summit Contestants Really Carrying Bags Of Prize Money? An Executive Producer Explains

As a seasoned mountaineer and TV enthusiast who has scaled the heights of Kilimanjaro and binge-watched countless survival shows, I must say that The Summit is undoubtedly the most exhilarating addition to the 2024 primetime lineup. The blend of adventure, suspense, and human drama is a perfect storm that leaves me on the edge of my seat every Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Among all the prime-time shows slated for 2024 television, “The Summit” stands out as the one that has me hooked the most. The suspense is palpable when contestants are suddenly tasked with scaling a mountain, and watching some struggle and fail to reach the summit sparks intrigue. However, it’s the bigger questions that start to surface in my mind. What would be the consequences if a competitor were to accidentally lose their share of the prize money while participating in a challenge up there on the mountain?

Kindly Producer Kevin Lee generously addressed my numerous queries about The Summit, such as the criteria for selecting the mountain and potential consequences if someone lost their winnings by throwing it off a cliff. Interestingly enough, the participants don’t actually carry large sums of money in their backpacks; instead, they have some cash on hand with them.

Each bag contained a mix of genuine money on the exterior and counterfeit cash inside. Regardless, each sack held thousands of real dollars. If someone had accidentally dropped one, we would’ve dispatched someone to retrieve it since there were thousands of dollars at stake. Although it wasn’t a million, it was still substantial. Fortunately, that didn’t occur, but we did discuss the potential consequences. It seems quite thrilling if such an event ever transpires.

The cash amount in each bag is not insubstantial, but it’s certainly less than the original $62,000+ that each contestant was said to have in their backpack. At the same time, they’re still carrying fake money that equates to that same value in addition to all the camping gear and survival sacks they must take on the fourteen-day hike up the mountain. So, before anyone cries “fake” or criticizes the series for not putting all the money in the sacks, it made little difference to those hiking.

All The Canceled And Ending TV Shows In 2024

Some shows will end this year.

Initially, a sneak peek of “The Summit” was shown on CBS in late September. However, its second episode didn’t premiere until October 9th. This gap allowed viewers ample opportunity to stay updated by streaming the show on-demand or through a Paramount+ subscription. The series also revealed how many participants might reach the mountain summit and share the initial million prize money they compete for.

As a devoted fan, I must admit that there seems to be a plausible scenario where none of the contestants might make it through this series, but I deeply hope my prediction proves false. Interestingly, the charismatic host and actor Manu Bennett got a sneak peek at the entire course before the contestants even set foot at base camp. Now, while Manu’s character as a gladiator doesn’t necessarily reflect the typical contestant on this show, I firmly believe that several resilient competitors in this season are more than capable of tackling the challenging hike ahead.

The central issue is whether they’ll still be present at the final stage to claim victory, as “The Summit” currently boasts an intriguing ensemble that aims to weed out less competitive climbers for a smoother ascent and remove dominant players to reduce competition. It’s captivating to observe, and I can’t help but ponder how it will unfold in the end.

You’ll simply have to be patient and tune in since “The Summit” will broadcast on CBS every Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET. I strongly advise you not to miss it, along with the latest series of “Matlock,” one of their newest offerings. Its pilot episode twist is something you’ll surely want to catch.
