Ariana Grande Reacts to Live-Action ‘Hercules’ Remake Fan-Casting

2024 was an exceptional year for Ariana Grande. Not only did Billboard place her among the top nine pop stars of the 21st century, but she also garnered critical praise for her portrayal of Galinda in Wicked. Previously, some may have written her off as just a pop star, given her background as a child star. However, Grande is now being viewed as a strong contender for the Academy Awards, with many predicting that she will receive a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. With Wicked: For Good scheduled for 2025, fans are eagerly waiting to see what Grande will do next. There’s even talk among some of them about wanting to see her star in a live-action remake of Disney’s Hercules.

During an interview with Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast (as reported by CinemaBlend), Ariana Grande expressed her thoughts on fans who hope to see her portray Megara – commonly known as Meg – in Disney’s upcoming live-action Hercules reboot. When asked about the possibility of playing Meg, Grande shared her own fondness for Hercules. Although she found the suggestion flattering, she mentioned that she has not yet had any discussions regarding starring in the live-action adaptation. She also believes that her former Victorious co-star would be a more suitable choice to embody the witty and sarcastic leading lady in Hercules. Grande stated: “[My friend] would be perfect for Meg.

It’s quite amusing since I used to sing the Muses’ parts when growing up. [laughs] … I’ve caught glimpses of it, but it’s not something we’ve ever seriously talked about. As much as I enjoy taking on roles and the thought of playing a ‘darker’ character like Megara appeals to me, I believe Elizabeth Gillies would be perfect for the role. You know my friend Liz Gillies? She’s incredibly talented. Oh my, she’d be fantastic in that part!

Right There,” “Thank U Next,” “Stuck with You,” and “The Boy is Mine.”

Later, she took on roles in the television series adaptation of “Dynasty” on The CW, portraying Fallon Carrington, and voiced Catwoman in the animated movie “Catwoman: Hunted.”

More recently, Gillies has ventured into the music industry with her debut album titled “We Wish You the Merriest,” which is set to release in 2023. This album features Christmas duets with Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “Family Guy.

Why Disney Has Taken So Long To Remake ‘Hercules’

Since 2010’s “Alice in Wonderland” raked in $1 billion at worldwide box offices, Disney has prioritized transforming its classic animated films into live-action productions. Films like “Cinderella,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Lion King,” “Dumbo,” “The Jungle Book,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Mulan,” “Lady and the Tramp,” “Peter Pan,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Pinocchio,” and “Winnie the Pooh” have all received live-action makeovers. In 2025, “Snow White” and “Lilo & Stitch” will hit theaters, but it seems Disney might be running out of animated films to adapt; a live-action “Moana” is on its way to cinemas only 10 years after the original. “Aristocats” and “Bambi” are in development, but what fans really want are remakes of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Hercules.

The project for a live-action film titled Hercules, initially announced in 2020, has been in development since then. The Russo brothers, directors of Avengers: Endgame, have taken on the role as producers. In June 2022, it was confirmed that Guy Ritchie, who directed the remake of Aladdin, would be directing this film. The latest update from April 2024 indicated that the script for Hercules was still being refined.

Given that both previous attempts at making a film based on The Legend of Hercules and the Dwayne Johnson-led movie Hercules failed at the box office in 2014, Disney may be approaching this project with caution. With fewer projects currently underway, Disney might need to quickly move forward with the production of a live-action Hercules, or they might find themselves in an unusual situation: creating an original film idea instead.

Realistically, it seems more likely that Disney will opt to produce a sequel to one of their past successful films rather than risking an original Hercules movie.
