Prior to Glen Powell embarking on his racing role in Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, he sought and received approval from the original film’s lead actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
As a close friend of Patrick Schwarzenegger, who is the son of “The Terminator”, Powell sought assistance from an actor featured in season three of “The White Lotus” to convince his father to agree with Powell starring in the 2025 remake of Stephen King’s 1982 novel.
During an interview on Thursday, Powell shared that Arnold had given his approval. He explained that Patrick Schwarzenegger, who’s a good friend of his, facilitated the conversation with Arnold when he requested it.
In the year 2014, the two actors appeared side by side on the silver screen when Powell became part of the cast for the third installment of the Expendables series. Powell stated that he reached out to Schwarzenegger as they hadn’t interacted since filming The Expendables 3 over a decade prior.
Despite this, Powell received complete approval from him to be part of the upcoming “Running Man” movie. As a tribute to his association with the series, Powell hinted at a special gift he’s creating for Schwarzenegger.
Arnold has granted us his whole approval, and in a few weeks, we’ll be able to present Arnold with a unique, enjoyable gift tied to the movie. This has me really looking forward to seeing him again.
As a thrilled fan, I couldn’t help but feel my heart pounding with excitement as Powell and Wright announced the November 7th debut of their rebooted “Running Man” at CinemaCon on Thursday! They were accompanied by none other than Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo, where we were given a sneak peek into the movie through some of the initial footage unveiled.
In contrast to the movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger from almost four decades ago, which was adapted from Stephen King’s novel published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman and on which Wright’s film is based, there will be differences in the storyline. The narrative takes place in a society ruled by totalitarianism, where lethal game shows serve as a means of punishment. In this adaptation directed by Wright, Ben Richards, portrayed by Powell, participates in a television show, where contestants must outrun assassins to win money needed for his ailing daughter’s treatment.
In addition to Powell, Brolin, and Domingo, William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra, and Jayme Lawson are also part of the cast. The production team includes Wright, Simon Kinberg, and Nira Park, while George Linder, James Biddle, Rachael Prior, and Audrey Chon serve as executive producers.
