Attending the Pokemon TCG Pocket Pop-up in London

  • We attended the recent Pokemon TCG Pocket Popup in London, UK
  • It featured fun, large scale interactive screens
  • Small tie-ins were also made for Pokemon GO players

As a lifelong Pokemon enthusiast and London resident, I must say that attending the Pokemon TCG Pocket Popup was an absolute blast! The interactive screens at Outernet never fail to impress, and this time around they truly delivered a unique experience for fans of all ages.

As a diehard Pokémon fan and with the new Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket dropping, you can bet your last Pikachu plushie that I wouldn’t miss the pop-up event held in London, just steps away from Tottnem Court Station and conveniently close to my humble abode! The excitement was electric on day one, and I was all systems go!

Outernet

Outernet is a interactive building – it’s got a ceiling and two walls that are giant monitors, working like a series of connected TV Screens. In the past, I have attended their digital butterfly event where we could wave to mae butterflies form and their interactive soccer event where children could run up and wave their hand to play soccer. I was interested in how this would be for Pokemon!

When we arrived, there was quite a queue to get to the front of the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket pop-up experience. There were several QR codes at the back, which allowed you to download the game. The instructions on the side of the wall said that each person would be able to open a pack on the wall, see if they can spy the EX Pikachu in the wave of cards, and then get some Pokemon and Pokemon GO merch.

After reaching the head of the line, you’re instructed to position yourself on an oversized PokeBall. Here, you can gesture to open one of three mystery packs (the content is random), which subsequently unveils a multitude of cards adorning the surrounding walls. By indicating towards the EX Pikachu, the first 2000 individuals to do so receive a discount code for the Pokemon Store, granting a seating plush Pikachu on eligible purchases. Since we were among this group, each of us received one! Lastly, you wave your arm to clear away all these cards and reveal your prize draws.

Everyone was cheering and making noise as EX Pokemon were revealed or Pokemon with interactive cards. The buzz was fantastic! I did not get a great pull but Dann got an EX Bulbasaur, which was fun to see! After your cards are done, you can then move to the door where you can grab prizes; Pokemon GO stickers, Pokemon GO keychain of your Team, a Captain Pikachu hat and your discount code if you made it in time. Just as a warning, the pack that you open on the wall doens’t appear on your account or anything! Some people were confused by that.

After exiting, you’ll find yourself at an entrance that takes you directly into a temporary Pokemon Horizon setup within another building. If you’re intrigued, you can snap a photo with a Pokemon backdrop which will be displayed on the wall. Additionally, there are some delightful Christmas-themed Pokemon Center items on display, set to become available in the store soon. Best of all, these pop-ups are entirely free!

Pokemon GO

If there is a pop-up for Pokemon then there is likely something in the area for Pokemon GO. In this particular event, you could see sponsored Outernet London stops, which have post cards containing the three Gigiantamx Starters. There was one which was a gym and at least four which were regular stops. These postcards are extremely fun to collect, so I stocked up.

In this location, various creatures emerged from lures, such as Unowns, which is always exciting to encounter. When you open Pokemon GO in this spot, you receive a temporary mission for Pikachu sporting a Red Spotted Birthday Hat. This series of tasks is simple; all you need to do is trade a Pokemon, form a friendship, and then catch some Pokemon from the second screen. It’s quite straightforward and can be completed fairly quickly!

It was a pretty fun experience, especially for a free one that you don’t need to pre-book.
