Avengers Co-Writer Bows Out: Why He Won’t Return for Doomsday & Secret Wars

At this stage, the Marvel Cinematic Universe operates smoothly, consistently delivering fresh content on both big screens and streaming platforms via Disney+. Fans who have followed the Marvel films chronologically will remember Christopher Markus as one of the writers behind some cherished installments in this interconnected universe. Lately, he has shared his reasons for not returning to pen the next two Avengers films.

Our knowledge about ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars‘ is quite scarce at present, but it has been confirmed that Christopher Markus won’t be returning to write these films with his partner Stephen McFeely. In an interview with ThePlaylist, he mentioned that his busy schedule prevents him from contributing to the upcoming Marvel movies as he stated:

It’s quite serendipitous, really! When we launched AGBO, one of our main goals was to seek out things to adapt and come up with our own ideas. Through some lucky breaks or personal choices, I found myself with a whiteboard full of potential projects – two series of books that we had the rights to, a screenplay, several other concepts, and a TV pilot waiting to be written. This was all before the ‘Avengers’ phenomenon hit us. Eventually, it became clear that if these ideas weren’t nurtured, they would wither away.

It appears impersonal; Markus discussed his multi-faceted production company AGBO, which seems to have numerous projects underway. Notably, these projects were in development even before the thought of reprising more Avengers films arose. To be more precise, the news about The Russo Brothers returning for those two titles.

This talented writing duo penned the initial Captain America trilogy, plus Thor: The Dark World, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. This collaboration primarily involved the Russo Brothers, and together they’ve created some of the finest movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Regarding the extensive time commitment required for such a project, Markus shared his thoughts.

Marvel demands a full-time dedication, so I clarified that this is my main focus because those movies require intelligent direction and guidance, which I enjoy providing. When it comes to Avengers, you can’t half-heartedly participate; it requires a long-term commitment, not something done casually or part-time.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I must admit that I yearn for Robert Downey Jr.’s return in “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” but it seems plausible that these projects might be too demanding given his current schedule. Respecting his decision to decline a Marvel role if it’s not up to his standards is only fair. Christopher Markus hinted at the multitude of tasks he’s handling right now, stating:

Currently, I’m not collaborating with Marvel due to a couple of reasons: Firstly, they have established themselves in their field, so I feel it’s best to let them continue their successful trajectory. Secondly, there are numerous other projects on my plate that demand my attention, such as a pilot for Netflix, another for Amazon, and nine books waiting to be transformed into something exceptional. At some point, one must make a decision about what to focus on and what to set aside. For me, at present, I’m choosing to work on the things I haven’t done yet, as these are what keep my creativity alive and vibrant.

Although they have teamed up with The Russo Brothers on projects like “The Electric State” (available with a Netflix membership), it will not be them who manage the ensemble of characters in “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”.

The movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is projected to hit theaters on May 1st, 2026. However, before that, we’ve got other films scheduled for release in 2025 such as “Thunderbolts”.
