As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the ongoing saga surrounding the James Bond franchise feels like a rollercoaster ride that I never wanted to get on. The drama between Barbara Broccoli and Amazon is reminiscent of a cat-and-mouse game, but instead of a furry felines, we have a legendary producer and a corporate giant.
The sensational departure of Daniel Craig from the James Bond franchise in “No Time to Die” has left fans eagerly anticipating who will step into 007’s shoes next. There have been numerous discussions about whether the new Bond should be of a certain color, gender, nationality, or age. However, Barbara Broccoli, long-time producer, has indicated that she is open to various possibilities for the super-spy role. Notably, Bond will remain male and British. Yet, the team at Eon Productions might face more challenges than usual due to Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, which gives them a share in the Bond franchise.
In March 2022, after intense negotiations, Amazon finalized an agreement worth approximately $8.5 billion to acquire MGM Studios. This purchase includes popular franchises such as Rocky, Silence of the Lambs, and The Pink Panther, along with the highly coveted James Bond series. Although Bond films are now available on Prime Video, the future direction of this franchise within the studio has been a topic of debate for nearly a year prior to the acquisition.
According to recent reports from the Wall Street Journal, there seems to be a significant disagreement between Amazon and Broccoli regarding the future direction of the Bond franchise. Apparently, Broccoli has shown no interest in collaborating with Amazon on upcoming Bond films, while Amazon appears keen on being involved and potentially influencing the project.
What Is Happening with the ‘James Bond’ Franchise?
Based on various sources, Broccoli has expressed her disapproval of Amazon to her circle, making it clear that she has no interest in collaborating with them and believes they are not suitable for the Bond franchise. This stance is consistent with her past actions, where she has advocated for the franchise to only have future releases in cinemas and for her and Eon Productions to continue as the primary creative forces behind one of the most prominent film series globally.
Other sources indicate that a significant disagreement arose between the two parties when producer Broccoli had a conversation with Amazon executive Jennifer Salke. In this meeting, Salke inadvertently referred to the Bond series as “merely content.” Although such a perspective might be typical for a corporate titan like Amazon, for Broccoli, the Bond franchise carries much greater significance than just being “content.
Prior to finalizing the MGM deal, it’s said that Amazon was actively exploring ways to broaden the James Bond universe, with plans for multiple spinoff series and possibly more films. This was compared to transforming Bond into a “Marvel-esque” franchise. However, these suggestions didn’t appeal to Broccoli, as the Bond franchise has been tightly controlled and largely family-operated for such a long time.
Following Daniel Craig’s last appearance as 007 in 2023, there’s been much buzz and speculation about who will take over the role, the direction of the storyline, and how the Bond franchise will continue post-James Bond’s death in No Time to Die. The list of questions is long, but answers have been scarce so far. One thing that’s clear, though, is that James Bond’s greatest adversary might not be one of his screen enemies, but rather the power struggles happening off-screen.
