Best New Tracks: FERG, Ab-Soul, Nujabes and More

As a music enthusiast with a penchant for hip-hop and electronic beats, this week’s selection of new tracks has left me absolutely thrilled! The diversity in sound and style is truly refreshing, each artist bringing their unique flavor to the table.

Wrapping up this week’s musical journey, TopMob presents the top picks for our weekly feature Standout Tracks.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m hyped about this week’s lineup! FERG, Ab-Soul, and Nujabes are taking the stage with their releases: DAROLD, Soul Burger, and the Samurai Champloo 20th Anniversary box set. Plus, we’ve got tunes from M.I.A. collaborating with Major Lazer, Jamie xx teaming up with Oonah Doherty, BADBADNOTGOOD working with Tim Bernardes, John Summit and Venbee, and Odd Mob. Not forgetting Kenny Mason! Can’t wait to dive in!

FERG – DAROLD

Ferg is returning with a new project titled “DAROLD,” marking his first release since 2020’s “Floor Seats II.” This latest record offers an “intimate portrayal” of the artist, capturing different stages of his life while honoring those who significantly influenced him, including his mother, father, and grandmother. The album bears Ferg’s birth name and includes a self-portrait he painted earlier in the year.

Ab-Soul – Soul Burger

On his mixtape “Soul Burger”, Ab-Soul honors his childhood friend who passed away, often known as DoeBurger. This 15-track project is dedicated to him, a person who consistently motivated Ab-Soul from TDE to produce more joyful tracks that people could dance to. The mixtape boasts collaborations with artists such as Vince Staples, Doechii, JID, Lupe Fiasco, Ty Dolla $ign, Jason Martin, Thirsty P, Kamm Carson, Fre$h, Punch and Asia Holiday.

Remarkably, every one of these pieces was crafted by the late artist himself.

M.I.A. x Majer Lazer – “Where’s The Daddy?”

In a reunion after over a decade, music trio Major Lazer (Diplo and Switch) collaborate once more with M.I.A., releasing the track “Where’s The Daddy?” Diplo explains their history, saying, “Major Lazer’s background is convoluted and somewhat villainous. I was introduced to Switch as he was known for being the strangest and most hard-hitting DJ in London, while he was intrigued by my local Philadelphia scene featuring Spank Rock, Amanda Blank, Santigold, and Plastic Little. M.I.A. became involved with our project when XL Recordings called upon us to create beats for her. I didn’t succeed in making beats for her, but I made a mixtape titled Piracy Funds Terrorism, while Dave had some standout tracks. We ended up producing too many beats for her, so we decided to travel to Jamaica to record them because the artists there were incredibly skilled and their productions were cutting-edge. In Jamaica, we produced an album for Major Lazer that kickstarted a movement which has garnered billions of streams. It’s exciting to release ‘Where’s The Daddy?’ now since M.I.A. was one of the founding members of Major Lazer.

Odd Mob has released their take on John Summit and Venbee’s “Palm of My Hands” originally featured in Summit’s first album, “Comfort in Chaos“. Speaking about the remix, Odd Mob expressed gratitude for the opportunity and shared that they initially had doubts about transforming a DnB track into a house tune. However, they were pleased with the outcome as the slowed vocals added an interesting vibe to the final product.
