Bhutan’s Gelephu International Airport Is a Fusion of Tradition and Modern Innovation

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has unveiled their blueprint for the upcoming Gelephu International Airport, set to be Bhutan’s second international airport. Positioned near the Bhutan-Indian border and the Paitha River, this 68,000 square meter facility will be nestled amidst the kingdom’s verdant subtropical forests, majestic mountains, and flowing rivers. The design intends to instill an enduring memory of Bhutan and its Mindfulness City in Gelephu upon its visitors.

The entrance of the airport will showcase flexible and expandable modular timber structures, giving the impression of a stylish mountain range from afar. These sturdy timber components will be meticulously carved and painted in traditional Bhutanese style, featuring three types of dragons symbolizing the country’s history, present, and future. This design blends modern innovation with cultural heritage.

Inside the airport, traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship will be on display throughout its design. This includes Shing-Zo (woodwork), Par-Zo (carving), Lha-Zo (painting) and Tshar-Zo (weaving). The carvings will continue from the exterior to the interior, forming a unified design. The airport’s architecture will allow plenty of natural light, with a spacious triple-height entrance, large windows, and skylights. This design will offer peaceful indoor and outdoor spaces for yoga, sound baths, and meditation, mirroring Bhutan’s emphasis on tranquility.

Constructed in partnership with Arup and Cistri, this airport is set to debut in the year 2029. By the year 2040, it’s estimated that the airport will cater to approximately 1.3 million travelers each year and manage around 123 flights daily. At the Venice Architecture Biennale held in 2025, a showcase will display a timber diamond element from the airport’s exterior design.

As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but express my awe at this design that brilliantly blends Bhutan’s rich cultural legacy with contemporary flair. This thoughtful creation promises travelers an unforgettable and profound encounter at the Gelephu International Airport. The project underscores the delicate balance between cultural sensitivity, environmental preservation, and functional beauty, making it a stunning entrance to Bhutan’s Mindfulness City.
