As a long-time fan of Blade Runner and someone who has witnessed the evolution of technology and its impact on society, I find this lawsuit against Tesla by Alcon Entertainment quite intriguing. It seems that the lines between reality and science fiction are becoming increasingly blurred, which is both fascinating and concerning at the same time.
A film studio behind “Blade Runner 2049” is taking legal action against Tesla, claiming they utilized scenes from the movie to train an AI-powered picture generator, thereby producing promotional content without a license.
In a lawsuit filed in California federal court on Monday, Alcon Entertainment claims that Elon Musk and his autonomous vehicle company have wrongfully used the brand of the movie ‘Blade Runner 2049’ to advertise their robotaxi at a high-profile event earlier this month. The production company states that they do not wish for the film to be linked with Musk due to his controversial political and social views, as they are currently seeking partnerships for their upcoming TV series.
The grievance, containing accusations of copyright violation and misrepresentation, further mentions Warner Bros. Discovery, claiming they aided in the formation of the collaborative agreement.
A sensible brand contemplating a Tesla partnership must factor in Elon Musk’s highly influential, politically charged, and unpredictable behavior, which at times crosses into hate speech. Alcon decided they did not wish for BR2049 to be associated with Musk.
More to come.
