Blumhouse Productions has officially sealed a lengthy agreement with Twisted Pictures, the company behind the enduring horror series “Saw,” to acquire a portion of it. The deal was negotiated with producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg at the helm.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about the Saw franchise! Although the specifics of the agreement remain undisclosed, Lionsgate, who initially distributed the first movie back in 2004 and holds an ownership stake, will continue to handle the distribution of future films. Furthermore, Content Partners, the parent company of Revolution Studios that boasts a vast collection of movies and shows, has acquired an undefined portion of the existing library, sharing this investment with Mark Burg who retains his own share.
As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the Blumhouse deal has brought the Saw franchise full circle for me. You see, it was back in 2024 when my Atomic Monster label joined forces with Blumhouse. Guess who was at the helm then? None other than me, James Wan! I had the honor of directing the first Saw movie, a film I also co-wrote with Leigh Whannell, the man behind classics like Wolf Man and The Invisible Man. So, getting back to this iconic franchise feels like coming home after a long journey.
The ‘Saw’ series has shaped a generation’s perception of horror, and its cultural influence keeps expanding, making it a smart move to invest in one of the most iconic and profitable horror franchises of the past two decades. What truly intrigues me about bringing ‘Saw’ under Blumhouse is the return of James and Leigh, and I look forward to witnessing the future of this franchise unfold under their leadership,” said Blumhouse CEO and founder Blum in a statement.
Wan noted the franchise is where he and Whannell began tehir Hollywood journeys.
In his own words, this is a fresh creative step back into the Saw franchise for him, something he hasn’t done since its early stages. He’s excited about staying true to the original essence while also moving the storyline forward in unique and surprising ways.
Discussions between Blumhouse and Twisted Pictures began last year, however, they hit a roadblock earlier this year due to disagreements over the sale price. The 10 films under the Saw franchise have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide at the box office.
On a budget of just $1.2 million, the initial Saw movie turned out to be one of the most financially successful horror films ever made. It raked in an impressive $18.2 million in domestic box office sales and amassed a staggering $104 million globally. The film’s success in home entertainment was equally monumental.
The last Saw movie was the 2023’s Saw X. An 11th movie was in the works but stalled out.
Given that the tenth movie was a hit, it seemed like an ideal moment to hand over responsibility. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved with Lionsgate over the past two decades and extremely grateful to the fans who’ve supported us from the start. It’s particularly significant to see the series return to its founders, James and Leigh, and there couldn’t be a more fitting person than Jason to guide Saw through its upcoming phase,” Koules expressed in a statement.
Speaking for himself, Burg mentioned that he funded the initial Saw movie following his encounter with Wan and Whannell, as well as reading a script detailing a situation where two individuals are trapped and controlled by a sinister character named Jigsaw, who compels them to face gruesome decisions.
In early 2003, Burg and Koules were shown a grisly seven-minute short movie by Gregg Hoffman, who had discovered it. This movie depicted James Whannell with his head trapped in a gruesome bear trap. The film was later presented to Twisted Pictures by Hoffman.
Approximately two decades ago, we encountered James Wan and Leigh Whannell, and invested in the first “Saw” film. This movie was nothing short of enchanting, exceeding all our expectations and becoming a sensation far beyond what we had ever imagined. Our fans have been instrumental in keeping this franchise thriving for over two decades. It’s been an incredible journey, but with the recent demise of our cherished executive producer, Jason Constantine, I feel it’s time for me to embark on new narratives. “Saw” will forever hold a special place in my history and Hollywood lore, and I wish nothing more than for Jigsaw and the Saw Universe to continue being brought to life through numerous movies and years ahead.
Last but not least, I’d like to express my gratitude to the fantastic actors, crew members, and Lionsgate executives who have collaborated with us on ten movies over the past two decades. This entire journey wouldn’t have been possible without each of you. We extend our best wishes to James, Leigh, and Jason as they carry on the franchise – may they achieve great success.
Adam Fogelson, head of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed his support for the transfer of ownership of the Saw franchise. “Throughout the making of ten suspenseful and gripping Saw films, Oren and Mark have been exceptional partners, producers, and caretakers of this billion-dollar franchise that has significantly impacted Lionsgate’s history,” he stated. “As they hand over the reins to James, who kickstarted it all, and to Jason and the team at Blumhouse, I couldn’t be more confident or intrigued about what lies ahead. Let the game begin!
CAA Evolution served as sole financial advisor on the ownership acquisition deal.
