As a seasoned travel journalist with a knack for adventure and a penchant for the quirky, I’ve seen my fair share of unique sights and met some truly extraordinary characters during my travels across the United States. And let me tell you, Claptrap, the roguish bot from the Borderlands video game franchise, is no exception.
With Borderlands hyped up to be one of the biggest movies of the summer, millions of people have been tracking one of the franchise’s most iconic characters as it embarked upon a cross-country trip in a surreal, funny, and kind of adorable series of Instagram posts. That character is the wiseass, chanky robot, Claptrap, voiced by the delightful Jack Black in the new film, which also stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramírez, Jamie Lee Curtis, and many more. We’ve been following Claptrap’s adventure on Earth and are happy to file this report on its epic journey. But first, the synopsis for Borderlands and the latest trailer can be found below:
In the unfathomable reaches of space lies Pandora, the most tumultuous planet governed by the notorious bounty hunter, Lilith (Blanchett). With a past veiled in enigma, she is compelled to revisit her home. The reason for her return: locating the long-lost daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), an infamous SOB and the most powerful entity in the universe. Along her perilous journey, Lilith forms an unlikely bond with a motley crew – Roland (Hart), a grizzled mercenary on a quest; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a precocious pre-teen demolitions expert; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s fearsome protector; Tannis (Curtis), an eccentric scientist with vast experience; and Claptrap (Black), a sarcastic robot.
In unison, these unexpected champions will face off against extraterrestrial beings and risky outlaws to unearth Pandora’s most volatile mystery. The destiny of the cosmos rests upon their shoulders – yet they’ll be battling for a greater cause: their camaraderie. Inspired by one of the best-selling video game series in history, prepare for your adventure in Borderlands.
Claptrap Crashes on Earth in the Borderlands of Los Angeles
On June 25th, Claptrap’s journey took an unexpected turn as he departed from Pandora and landed roughly on Earth. The Instagram post shared earlier reads, “Our Claptrap unit might have made a mistake in navigating through the galaxy and is now exploring this place called Earth. Fortunately, it exhibits only a tad of fear. Keep following for updates on its destination.”
It was discovered that Claptrap spent some time enjoying the sun at Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier, followed by visits to the Hollywood sign and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Everyone, including fans and puzzled spectators, had a chance to engage with the robot directly. An Instagram post announced, “Los Angeles residents, if you come across this caretaking robot, kindly provide instructions to the nearest ATLAS transit hub. #ClapTrappedInLA.”
Viva Clap Vegas & Houston, We Have a Claptrap
Heading towards the East, ClapTrap found itself drawn to the vibrant allure of Sin City – an unexpected pitstop in Las Vegas. The surreal scene unfolded as this little robot rolled through the streets bathed in neon lights. An even greater anomaly unfurled when it came to a halt on the set of local TV news, Fox 5. Here’s a sneak peek at that peculiar interview:
Following visits to Caesar’s Palace and the Las Vegas Strip, Claptrap carried on with its journey, passing through the heart of Texas. The bot encountered some detours in Houston and Austin, leading to unexpected pop-ups. Here are a few:
- Houston
- Space Center Houston
- Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park
- Astros World Series Ring @ Minute Maid Park
- Buc-ees
- Appearance at 104.1 KRBE & FOX 26 Houston
- Austin
- Appearance at Fox7 Austin
- University of Texas-Austin

In simpler terms, Claptrap, hailing from Texas, was headed to St. Louis, Missouri for some engagements. He visited Great Day St. Louis, caught a movie at Marcus Theatres, checked out the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station, enjoyed a local beer, took a ride on the St. Louis Wheel, and didn’t miss a chance to explore Busch Stadium and The Gateway Arch. Catch a glimpse of his adventures on Instagram here.
Lost in Chicago and Feeling Philly
As a gamer from St. Louis, I found myself unexpectedly in Chicago – the city known for its improvisation and bustling energy. I visited iconic landmarks like The Bean, Wrigley Field, The Chicago Theatre, The Second City, and The Art Institute of Chicago. To keep my energy up for my gaming adventures, I made pit stops at local favorites. I savored deep dish pizza at Giordanos and indulged in hot dogs from Wrigleyville Dogs.
As a passionate gamer, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of healthy competition when Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, welcomed Claptrap into its embrace. I got to tag along with Claptrap on its exciting adventure through my hometown. We hit up The New 96.5 for an unforgettable radio appearance, paid respects to the iconic Rocky Statue and those infamous steps that gave it a run for its money. Claptrap even graced Independence Hall with its presence and took a tour of Lincoln Financial Field. And let me tell you, no visit to Philadelphia would be complete without sinking my teeth into a mouth-watering Philly Cheesesteak from Pat’s King of Steaks! What an adventure that was, sharing the unique flavors and experiences that make this city so special.
Claptrap: Lost in New York
If Claptrap managed to navigate New York City, it can handle any challenge! Indeed, this quirky character took a vacation in the Big Apple, causing traffic jams and startling onlookers. Amidst the chaos of Radio City, Times Square, and the intricate subway network, Claptrap eventually made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Perhaps Claptrap would have been better off remaining in its current location, given that San Diego Comic-Con has recently commenced. It appears to be heading back to California, making a stop in Knoxville, Tennessee next. Take a look at the bot’s most recent destination below, where it encountered the Sunsphere, the Dolly Parton mural, and the bustling streets of Knoxville.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t predict exactly where that quirky robot, Claptrap, will pop up next in the game world before Borderlands hits the cinemas on August 9th. But one thing is for sure – he’ll be stealing the show when the movie premieres!
