As a seasoned gamer and avid Saturday Night Live (SNL) enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Bowen Yang‘s recent revelation about a past host who left cast members in tears during the table read is truly eye-opening. It’s not every day you hear about someone who can make multiple SNL cast members shed tears before the show even starts!
As a gamer reminiscing this week, I can’t help but recall an old Saturday Night Live host whose table read left several cast members in tears.
During a recent interview on “Watch What Happens Live,” Yang shared that one SNL host, in particular, caused several cast members to cry before a table-read on a Wednesday due to his strong dislike for their ideas.
Host Andy Cohen was left shocked, and Yang went on to call the ordeal “terrible.”
In another part of the late-night talk show on Bravo, Yang also addressed a query regarding unsuccessful skits, and shared a memory about a piece he co-wrote with the host of Season 49, Ayo Edebiri.
“Yang mentioned that they scripted a live skit set inside an elevator, where the two of us were joking about persuading everyone to kiss due to getting stuck. However, unexpectedly, it was turned into a pre-recorded segment without our knowledge, forcing us to adjust… It didn’t turn out as well as I had expected.”
The drawing he seemed to be pointing out is titled “Trapped in an Elevator,” starring Edebiri, Yang, Kenan Thompson, Andrew Dismukes, and Sarah Sherman. It was broadcast in February.
As a gamer, even though the game’s result caught me off guard, I’ve learned not to dwell on the disappointment. “You just take it in stride. Humor is subjective, and you never know how it will resonate with a particular crowd. But that’s alright, you shake it off.”
In 2018, Yang began working as a writer for Saturday Night Live (SNL). The following year, he moved on to become a cast member. As we approach season 50 next year, this will mark his seventh season with the show. At the Emmys, scheduled for next month, he has been nominated in the best supporting actor in a comedy series category, which is his third nomination in that category.
