Box Office: Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ Looks to Sink Teeth Into $40M-$45M Opening

Over the Easter weekend, I’m expecting our studio to gather more cinematic eggs than any other, thanks to the blockbuster hit “A Minecraft Movie” and Ryan Googler’s critically praised original film “Sinners“, featuring the talented Michael B. Jordan.

Will the competition be won by which movie? Warner Bros., aiming to keep anticipation in check, is aiming for an opening between $35 million and $40 million for the film titled “Sinners“. There’s some cause for caution, given that it’s an R-rated, period supernatural vampire movie. Predictive services are more optimistic, forecasting a potential opening of $40 million to $45 million, while other studios believe the debut of “Sinner” could surpass $50 million.

In its third release, the Minecraft Movie, produced by Legendary, is expected to rake in between $40 million and $45 million, surpassing the $600 million mark globally, with $300 million coming from domestic sales. This film is on track to become one of the most successful video game adaptations ever made, currently leading as the top-grossing movie of 2025. This success is a much-needed victory for Warner Bros.’ film executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who have faced criticism following a series of high-profile flops.

The film “Sinners” represents a significant turning point for the executive team, as they pledge to collaborate with renowned directors and offer filmmakers generous financial leeway. Notably, the production of “Sinners” amounted to $90 million, including marketing expenses – a substantial budget for a genre movie, surpassing the $50 million budget allocated to Coogler and Jordan’s “Creed”.

Based on the enthusiastic reception of “Sinners”, it seems Coogler has once again produced a successful film. As of Wednesday, its Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score stands at an impressive 99%, which is the highest of his career to date. He made his debut in the industry with the indie success “Fruitvale Station”, and subsequently directed “Creed” and two blockbuster “Black Panther” films.

In the 1932 film titled “Sinners,” Jordan plays twin businessmen named Smoke and Stack, who are both portrayed by him. These characters spent their post-World War I years in the Chicago underworld before returning after seven years to their racially segregated hometown, Clarksdale, Mississippi. They arrive with wealth, a truckload of alcohol, and plans for opening a nightclub. However, they soon face unforeseen atrocities along the way.

David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter notes that the talented filmmaker’s debut original feature, titled ‘Sinners,’ is not adapted from real-life incidents or pre-existing intellectual property. Instead, he skillfully incorporates numerous thematic depths and blends multiple genres, making it appear as if there are three distinct films rolled into one.

Moving forward, Rooney describes, “This is a complex piece – a vivid portrayal of life in the Jim Crow era, a thrilling burst of vampire terror, an engaging exploration of the spiritual and supernatural aspects of blues music, a symbol for the fight for freedom, be it on earth or beyond. Part art-house, part grindhouse, it’s a violent medley that seems unlikely to gel. Yet, it does, all thanks to Coogler’s powerful direction, an exceptional cast, immersive IMAX visuals, sound that vibrates intensely, and music that deeply stirs emotions while speeding up the heart rate.

Actors Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, and Miles Caton are featured in the film “Sinners“, set to be released in cinemas everywhere starting from April 18 (with preview screenings on April 17).
