As a seasoned gamer who’s been through countless virtual worlds, I must say that stepping into the real-life spectacle of Broadway has been quite an exhilarating journey. The week ended July 28 was no exception, with ‘The Outsiders’ continuing its reign, breaking box office records for the sixth consecutive week!
The Outsiders continued to break box office records for the sixth week in the row.
Last week’s performance of the musical, set in 1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma and based on S.E. Hinton’s novel about teenagers, generated a remarkable $1.46 million. Interestingly, it even surpassed its full capacity, reaching over 100%. The show has been thriving since it was awarded the Tony for Best Musical on June 16th.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed that the prices for regular tickets in the show have remained within the range of $67 to $187, and the top premium ticket has stayed at $328. However, over the past few weeks, I’ve observed an incremental increase in the average ticket price, which peaked at an average of $174.07 last week.
Last week, The Lion King musical claimed the number one spot at the box office, thanks to an additional performance compared to usual (nine instead of eight), resulting in a revenue of approximately $2.6 million. Wicked and Hamilton, on the other hand, secured second and third place with earnings of $2.3 million and $2.02 million respectively for that week.
“Hell’s Kitchen, a highly-nominated musical inspired by Alicia Keys’ tunes and featuring performances from both Keys and Jay-Z during the Tony Awards broadcast, was the fourth highest-earning production in the industry last week, generating $1.7 million. Despite a slight drop of $22,000 compared to the previous week, it has maintained 100% seating capacity, a feat that it has sustained for several weeks.”
As a theater enthusiast, I noticed that despite the absence of two shows last week, the overall box office collections for the industry remained relatively stagnant, following the closure of “Home” and the revival of “Who’s Tommy” on July 21. This drop in attendance was approximately 4%.
