Busy Philipps and Sara Bareilles Set for Sing Out for Freedom Benefit Concert in New York

As a passionate advocate for civil liberties and a dedicated theatre enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming Sing Out for Freedom benefit concert at the NYU Skirball Center. With Busy Philipps receiving the Michael Friedman Freedom Award, it’s evident that the event will be a celebration of inspiring humanitarians, artists, and activists who use their voices to fight for justice.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) are working out last-minute arrangements for their yearly charity event, the “Sing Out for Freedom” concert.

On October 28, the event is set to occur at NYU Skirball Center. This gathering aims to highlight social injustices and civil rights matters through a remarkable, handpicked evening filled with music, spoken word, and other performing arts. The theme of this year’s 22nd edition, titled “No Matter What…We Sing Out for Freedom,” will recognize Busy Philipps with the Michael Friedman Freedom Award. This accolade is given to individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions as humanitarians, artists, and activists. Previous recipients include Harry Belafonte, Alan Cumming, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Broadway for Racial Justice.

The event will feature an impressive lineup of renowned artists and hosts, such as Sara Bareilles, a Grammy winner; J. Harrison Ghee, a Tony Award recipient; Eden Espinosa, a Tony nominee; Jasmine Amy Rogers, the lead in the upcoming Broadway musical “Boop! The Betty Boop Musical”; Liana Stampur, one of the creators of Sing Out for Freedom; and actors from the Tony-winning Broadway musical “Suffs”. More performers and guests will be unveiled in the upcoming weeks.

Established jointly by Stampur, renowned entertainer Erich Bergen, and Donna Lieberman (NYCLU’s executive director), “Sing Out for Freedom” was conceived. Proceeds from this endeavor support the efforts of both the NYCLU and ACLU in upholding civil rights and liberties not just in New York, but nationwide. The production and direction of the benefit concert are entrusted to Bergen, while Ari Conte serves as executive producer. Michael J. Moritz Jr. will take on the role of music director.

Lieberman announced that the theme for this year’s Sing Out for Freedom concert is ‘No Matter What’. This call-to-action aims to mobilize New Yorkers with music, dance, and more to strive for a better future as we approach Election Day. Lieberman emphasized the importance of voting YES on Proposition 1, which will secure abortion rights and other essential freedoms in our state constitution. The concert will also highlight our victories, reveal battles yet to come, and motivate action against a powerful, nationwide effort to restrict our liberties.
