The debut season of the game Marvel Rivals is now live, and the creators at NetEase plan to introduce a total of four characters throughout a span of three months, ultimately unveiling the entire team known as the Fantastic Four.
Enthusiasts are aware that additional characters such as Ultron and Blade are soon to be unveiled. Although an exact timeline hasn’t been set yet, game director Guangyun Chen has verified that the developers plan to introduce a fresh character approximately every six weeks.
A New Marvel Rivals Hero Every 1.5 Months?
According to a recent interview with Metro, Chen revealed that NetEase intends to consistently introduce new heroes approximately every 1.5 seasons. In simpler terms, he mentioned that they plan to roll out heroes regularly at this rate.
Each season, we plan on unveiling fresh, seasonal tales, brand-new maps, and new characters. To make the content even more engaging, we’ll divide each season into two parts: each part will last for three months. For every half of the season, we will introduce a unique hero. Our ultimate goal is to consistently improve your gaming experience and keep our community buzzing with excitement!
Initially, at the onset of Season 1, NetEase introduced Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and Sue Storm (Invisible Woman). In approximately 1.5 months, spectators are eagerly awaiting the addition of Johnny Storm (Human Torch) and Ben Grimm (The Thing) to the cast.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been buzzing with excitement over the rumors about upcoming characters in our favorite game. Unofficially, there’s chatter about some heavy hitters joining the roster, such as Blade, Deadpool, Captain Marvel, MODOK, Hit-Monkey, and Angela (Thor’s sis). Moreover, I’ve heard whispers that iconic X-Men characters like Emma Frost, Phoenix/Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Professor X might soon be playable too.
Is This Release Model Possible?

Instead of releasing a new character approximately every other season like Overwatch, Blizzard’s hero shooter typically puts out three characters annually. If Marvel Rivals were to follow a release schedule of one hero every 1.5 months (including the Fantastic Four team-up season with two heroes per drop), they would need to create eight new characters each year.
Fortunately for NetEase, they seem to have a stockpile of heroes in development, giving them ample time to refine each character before launching them individually. Their inclination towards using lesser-known Marvel characters means they may spend several years creating heroes based on the most obscure figures. Even focusing on just the X-Men could result in multiple years of content production, and there are still other street-level characters like Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Gwenpool yet to be hinted at as potential additions to the game.
Additionally, there’s the challenge of selecting suitable villains from a pool that is abundant. Developers could potentially dedicate an entire year to incorporating Spider-Man villains into the game, yet there would still be numerous excellent villains remaining untouched.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the continuous growth of games like Marvel Rivals, with its ever-increasing array of playable characters. Just look at League of Legends, boasting an impressive 169 champions and still counting! It’s safe to say that this game is built for a lengthy and steady gaming journey.
Marvel Rivals is currently available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
