Candice Bergen Makes Catty J.D. Vance Joke at Emmys

As a long-time fan of Candice Bergen and her iconic role as Murphy Brown, I must say that Sunday night’s Emmys performance was a masterclass in wit and political commentary. Bergen, with her sharp intellect and quick humor, managed to encapsulate the progress we’ve made, yet subtly highlight the regressive views of some current politicians, like J.D. Vance, in a way that was both poignant and hilarious.

On the evening of Sunday, 2024, Candice Bergen graced the Emmys stage once more and delivered a quip aimed at the Republican vice-presidential nominee, J.D. Vance.

The well-known actress from the CBS series “Murphy Brown,” who was notoriously criticized by conservative politicians in the ’90s, recently drew a parallel between her show’s iconic plotline and today’s political news.

For 11 years, I had the immense pleasure of portraying the main role in a comedy show titled ‘Murphy Brown.’ During this time, I worked alongside talented and hilarious actors, received top-notch scripts, and in a memorable scene, my character faced criticism from Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy chose to raise her baby as a single mom.

After pausing, Bergen made a sarcastic comment: “Wow, how much progress we’ve made… Nowadays, a Republican vice presidential candidate wouldn’t criticize a woman for having children. So, as they say, mission accomplished.” Then, with a hint of sarcasm, Bergen added a cat-like meow, which sparked a wave of laughter and applause.

At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Bergen was there to bestow the award for the top comedic actress, an accolade that went to Jean Smart from the show ‘Hacks’.

I’ve often found myself criticizing women who choose not to have children, labeling them as a group of “cat ladies.” However, it seems my words have backfired spectacularly, sparking widespread criticism, mockery, and perhaps even inspiring Taylor Swift, self-proclaimed “childless cat lady,” to endorse Kamala Harris over Donald Trump last week.
