Cannes According to… Breaking Through the Lens Head Daphne Schmon

As a gamer, I’m no rookie when it comes to Cannes. Back in 2018, I took the stage there to launch my non-profit organization, Breaking Through the Lens. This group of mine is all about giving a leg up to filmmakers who face marginalization due to their gender, helping them secure funding for their projects.

Though “Breaking Through the Lens” has become a fixture in film festivals ranging from Sundance to Venice, Schmon is well-versed in the intricacies of the Cannes Film Festival.

In the following section, she outlined some do’s (carry Waterproof Blister Band-Aids) and don’ts (avoid dining at hotel restaurants) for attending the French festival.

She provided a list of things to do (Waterproof Blister Band-Aids) and things not to do (eating at hotel restaurants) when going to the French festival below.

In the section below, she suggested bringing Waterproof Blister Band-Aids as a must and recommended against dining in hotel restaurants while attending the French festival.

What’s the best budget-friendly eatery in Cannes? Finding an affordable option in Cannes, especially during festival season, can be quite challenging. However, I once stumbled upon Taqueria Lupita and it was a delightful find for any Mexican food enthusiast like myself. The food is authentic, flavorful, and surprisingly budget-friendly, making it a convenient stopover between meetings or before a night out on the town.

What’s the best deal for tasty Mexican food in Cannes? Finding a bargain for delicious Mexican cuisine in Cannes during festival season can be tricky. But, I once discovered Taqueria Lupita and it was a hidden gem worth sharing. As a fellow Mexican food lover, I was genuinely impressed by its authenticity, flavor, and affordability. The quick service and accurate tacos make it an ideal choice for a casual meal or snack on the go.

What’s your preferred meal spot in Cannes?La Casa di Nonna has become our go-to eatery for the Breaking Through the Lens (BTTL) crew. It boasts a warm, trattoria-like ambiance and is hidden away from the bustling tourist trail. The Pappardelle della Nonna are simply divine, while they also offer excellent coffee and brunch options. Situated on Rue Hoche, it’s conveniently located near the Palais but offers a peaceful retreat from the Croisette’s chaos.

Is La Plage du Martinez overrated?Absolutely! And that goes for most hotel restaurants too. You’ll end up spending a lot only to be left feeling disappointed. If you’re after a sea view, opt for a sandwich or crêpe instead and relax on the Croisette benches. The view remains stunning, but without the hassle.

What is the biggest mistake one can make during Cannes?Exhausting oneself by burning the candle at both ends. The allure of late-night galas followed by morning meetings may be hard to resist, but remember that the Festival is a long race rather than a quick sprint. It’s crucial to maintain your energy levels, stay hydrated, and take time for yourself to catch your breath. If you don’t, by day three, you might find yourself running on empty, struggling with names, and carrying on entire conversations with your sunglasses!

Where can I find a late-night drink spot with an authentic vibe in Cannes? The MISFITS afterparty is definitely the place to go (if you can locate it!). We had the privilege of encountering A.J., Ramfis, and their team last year. It’s one of the few venues that exudes an entirely unpretentious atmosphere – fantastic music, wonderful people, and an unusual energy that sets it apart from the rest of Cannes.

A spot to skip during the festival? Any location that has a velvet rope and a bouncer wearing a headset, who’s “verifying the guest list.” It’s best to avoid such places – you’ll probably find a more enjoyable event elsewhere, minus the unnecessary air of self-importance.

What was my unique experience in Cannes? In 2018, I attended the Positive Planet Gala. A memorable moment was when Leonardo DiCaprio auctioned a BBQ on his New York balcony. The bid ended at an unbelievable price. It struck me then, this is only something that could happen in Cannes.

What really grates on my nerves at Cannes?People who make every interaction feel like a sales pitch. As someone deeply involved in pitching and working with investors, I can attest that there’s definitely a right moment for everything. I often remind our BTTL group that the most promising opportunities usually emerge from sincere, genuine interactions rather than scripted spiels. Instead of just talking, ask questions, pay attention, and be fully engaged. Establish relationships first—the rest will naturally unfold.

Is indulging in a late-night kebab from Dutch Berliner a guilty pleasure at Cannes? Absolutely! After a tiring day filled with meetings, there’s no better way to unwind than sinking your teeth into one of these flavorful kebabs. Messy yet delicious, they offer an oddly satisfying conclusion to a day that feels like Cannes itself.

What’s the most unusual request you’ve encountered during your time in Cannes?
Once, while waiting to watch a movie at the Lumière, a complete stranger asked me to keep her belongings while she walked down the red carpet. She didn’t return for them until I was already ascending the stairs myself. Moments like that make me wish more emphasis was placed on the films rather than the photo opportunities. After all, we’re there primarily for the movies, aren’t we?

What was your most memorable celebrity interaction?Last year’s BTTL panel encounter with Diane Kruger stood out as a truly special moment. She exhibited such genuine kindness and approachability, discussing topics like raising her young child and advocating for female directors. What really impressed me was her ability to manage everything so authentically – being a mother, an accomplished actress, a businesswoman, and always taking the time to uplift others. A true paragon of elegance.

What essential item do you never leave home without, apart from your phone?Waterproof Blister Band-Aids, also known as “Cannes Feet” bandages, are indispensable, especially for women navigating the Palais, meetings, and events in heels. They can really save the day!

What are your thoughts on the significance of standing ovations during movie premieres, and how they might reflect a film’s success? While I believe that the duration of applause isn’t necessarily the defining factor of a film’s quality, there is something incredibly profound about a genuine ovation – it resonates deep within. I still remember the premiere of Saim Sadiq’s masterpiece, “Joyland,” which marked the first time a Pakistani film graced the screens at Cannes and featured a transgender lead. This story was not only beautiful but also courageous. When the audience erupted into applause, I couldn’t help but be moved to tears. The collective recognition of that moment, beyond just the filmmakers, for the entire industry – it was palpable. Completing a film under any circumstances is impressive; reaching the prestigious Cannes stage and touching audiences so profoundly – that’s nothing short of miraculous. Those moments give me goosebumps and deserve a standing ovation.
