As a seasoned gamer of political documentaries, I must say that the upcoming release of “Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid” has me absolutely thrilled! Having witnessed the legendary James Carville’s political strategizing 31 years ago through Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker’s iconic documentary “The War Room”, I can’t help but feel like I’m watching a sequel to a classic that never ended.
Prior to the upcoming premiere of Matt Tyrnauer’s documentary feature, “Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid,” on this coming Friday, The Hollywood Reporter is excited to unveil the film’s trailer (see below) and poster (at the end of this article), kindly provided by distributor Greenwich Entertainment.
The movie, depicting the renowned Democratic political strategist James Carville and detailing his attempts to dissuade President Joe Biden from running for re-election, made its global debut at the Telluride Film Festival, where it was well-received. CNN Films broadcast it once on CNN last Saturday evening. Greenwich later obtained its theatrical rights, with the premiere happening at the IFC Center in New York this Friday; at the Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles on October 25th; and in other major cities soon after.
1 way: At the upcoming SCAD Savannah Film Festival, “Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid” is among the ten exceptional documentary features set to be showcased. On October 30, director Tyrnauer will participate in the 11th annual ‘Docs to Watch’ panel where this film will be discussed.
31 years ago, Carville gained fame as the central figure in Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary, “The War Room,” which followed Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign that he managed (you might remember the phrase, “It’s the economy, stupid”). Since then, the lasting impact of that groundbreaking film may have deterred other filmmakers from exploring Carville further. However, Tyrnauer was not dissuaded. As he explained to THR in August, “James was the lead character in a highly influential documentary that continues to resonate with audiences years later, which is quite unusual for any film.” With over three decades passing and Carville now a well-known figure rather than an up-and-coming political star, there was ample material for exploration. Additionally, the 2024 election served as further inspiration.
Initially, Tyrnauer didn’t anticipate that his documentary about Carville would become so centered on urging Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. This shift happened over a year before a controversial debate prompted many other Democrats to adopt the same stance. According to the filmmaker, “I was filming him at his home in New Orleans.” It was May 2023 when an ABC News-Washington Post poll showed Biden losing to Trump. As he read these results on camera, they transitioned to filming Carville making his daily phone calls to a close-knit group of friends from the ’92 Clinton campaign. At that moment, it seemed like something clicked for Carville; with his extensive knowledge, he recognized that Biden was in serious danger of losing. He saw this as a “change election,” believing that having Joe Biden run against Donald Trump would only represent more of the same. This realization sparked his persistence, and this theme became a significant part of the documentary I followed.
