Prior to tonight’s event, NIGO shared with the media that he first encountered Futura in Tokyo back in 1996. Being a fervent admirer, NIGO reminisced about their initial encounter when Futura donned one of his windbreakers featuring detachable sleeves. This marked the beginning of their interaction. Since then, NIGO frequently visited Futura in New York, and vice versa. Tonight, Futura was present among the audience, adorning one of their collaborative pieces for KENZO.
Futura reimagined the KENZO flower with his distinct calligraphy, also incorporating his iconic atom logo on jackets, bombers, trousers, and wide-leg pants. The graffiti-inspired spray effect transforms the contemporary KENZO flower onto the kimono collar. Futura rebrands KENZO’s logo using his unique font that adorns various accessories such as shopping bags, bouquet wraps, beer bottle holders, and baguette bags. NIGO emphasizes these elements, reminding us of the popularity of these items in New York during the ’90s. He also recalls Futura writing “fragile” in Japanese on a shirt he designed in 1990, which is now featured on the tags of these pieces.
